For those who have read my R32GTR track car build thread you will recall I mentioned that I have decided to build a Cosworth YB engine. Bit of a random thing to do you may say but with the Skyline really only requiring the Syvecs ECU and some wiring, coupled with the fact I like building engines it isnt all that crazy. I used to own a couple of MKII Escort RS2000's and have build MANY Pinto engines in various specs over the years so I am familiar with the majority of the workings of a YB. At the moment I'm not really 100% sure where I'm going with this engine build but the (current, tentative) plan is to shove it in a decent rally prepped MKII shell .
When I had this engine building notion it started out with me building a mid-spec 2litre Pinto. Then it morphed into a standard YB rebuild....Now that I've had time to seriously think about it I have decided that I am aiming for a 500HP motor. This is getting up there in Cosworth terms but reasonably easy to achieve given the right turbo, injectors and good prep.
I am trying to source parts as economically as possible (*cough* Ebay!) but not scrimp on quality as I want it to last!! First thing I have noticed is that, compared to RB26 parts, YB parts prices are comically cheap which is refreshing!
First off, I managed to get myself a decent cam cover for £30....
This had been modified to accept individual coil packs which suited me fine as the plan is to run modern engine management (DTA S60 is in the frame at the moment!) anyway. Also has a breather fitting on the rear, again a bonus!.
Then I bought a 4WD plenum (£60) from a local RS breakers and found a 4WD throttle body (£16) on Ebay.....
A common plenum mod is to fit a spacer between the 2 sections. I plan to do this too and use good quality Cometic gaskets (which I intend to use EVERYWHERE) for good sealing.
Today I made a 2 1/2 hour trip to pick up a '200' block (out of a 4WD saphhire). The 200 is the most desireable of the Pinto blocks as it is a bit stronger and allows easier fitment of 'long studs'. I picked this up for a bargain £270!!. It has had liners fitted and will make an excellent base for this build.....
Now, unexpectedly I came across a 4WD cylinder head again, on Ebay! The seller said it had extensive det damage but TBH, from the pics it didn't look all that bad:nervous::nervous:. I took a bit of a punt on it and got it for a measly £70...It seemingly has had bronze guides fitted and extensive porting work......IF it turns out to be salvageable then I have got myself a bargain. If it's scrap then so be it. HAD to be worth a gamble at that price! Hopefully this will arrive sometime next week.
So, despite my intention for this to be a long-term (18 month-2 yr) build, I have already got myself a block, head, cam cover and plenum in 1 month for the grand total of £446!!!!. The rest of the parts I am going to go easy on and look for genuine bargains where I can. Since I am in no hurry I can wait for these genuine bargains to appear and pounce on them. Starting to get a good feel for parts prices so know what is cheap and what is not.
So,...it all starts here. Hopefully some of you will find this interesting and a little break from all things Nissan. Wish me luck ..
