No front reg plate

What is the law regarding this. I've seen a few GTR's without a front reg plate and I think it looks really good, but also thought it was illegal

Sam88101 28th November 2013 11:51 AM

It is! Got to be visible! Cant even put it in the window

wmd_gtr 28th November 2013 12:03 PM

Ah I knew it was, but I seen a few uk GTR's without the front plate and that got me wondering lol

wmd_gtr 28th November 2013 12:03 PM

The ones without must get some amount of hassle from the police

Sam88101 28th November 2013 12:06 PM

You could try it and see how long you get away with it. Iv done it with cars and not be caught for months
Only get a slap on the wrist if you do get caught anyway

Buzby 28th November 2013 01:46 PM

Ran mine like it for 2 months as I liked the look but I always carried the plate in the cabin. To cut a long story short I got pulled in London on Regents Street which drew quite a crowd. (kinda good, kinda not as I got quite a lecture :blahblah:)

I didn't realise it carried a fine so i said someone had just backed into me and having the plate in the car really helped, hence no fine. Now ive opted for a bike plate (again illegal) but at least it's displayed and I think it looks OK.

You could drive around without a front plate, or a smaller plate, but if you get pulled you could get fined. If you've got your plate in the boot and can attach it there and then you might get away with it.

There's a specific letter height and amount of spacing between each character that it needs to be. It's not the size of the plate, it's the size of the characters and spacing between and around them.

If you go for an MOT without you're full-size plate they will fail you for it, I always keep mine in the boot just in case.

Removed mine 3 days ago as the nismo bracket broke, got the numberplate tape and plate in the boot, driving 3 days now without it.

Really? ... the laws not optional you know. Be interested how you'd react if your property (or worse family) got hit by a car who was unidentifiable due to no number plate on the front.

No plate or bike plate looks a bit silly in my opinion.
Just mark the owner out as thinking they are clever, obviously flouting the law.

Not sure I see the purpose.
Do people think it's clever or it's that important to the car's looks?

Don't get it myself.

They won't fail you if they know the correct laws or you have the documentation with you. I've never had issues with cut down plates following the legal criteria. Think of the other end of the stick such as the older Jags and Rover 75's they had massive plates oversized to fill the back recess.

For example like my old Impreza here many years back, this passed MOT's no issues and the plate is much shorter.

My Supra which ran no front plate however didn't pass an MOT due to no plate :D

+ 1 - but at least it's not like people are shouting about it on public forums and displaying their number plates......oh, wait a minute....:chairshot

 I'm guessing there was more than one advisory on that!!

TomS 28th November 2013 02:19 PM

Sorry, when I said "will fail without full-size plate" I meant full-size characters and correct spacing, a chopped down standard plate as you say is ok.

deankenny 28th November 2013 02:25 PM

I actually went to the cop station, and shown them without plate and explained the situation, because of the drill holes, they need smoothing etc before fitting the plate straight to bumper, they simply gave me a 7 day producer, work must be done within 7 days and taken to a MOT certified garage to stamp that the front plate is attached and legal, upon which i go back to the cop station show them the stamp and they close down the issue. Until then the police told me if i get pulled to show them the 7 day document explaining the situation and can go on my way, its been 3 days now, but due to go back on tomorrow finally.

Neanderthal 28th November 2013 02:28 PM

No plates or insurance here. In the unlikely event I get pulled I'll just say the forms are in the post and someone stole my plates from the car park I've just been in.
Laws, pah who lives by those!...

The Zedhed 28th November 2013 03:21 PM

/\ /\ :D:D

Even on bikes I run a legal plate, why give them another reason to pull ya!
