Put Toyo R888 on for the Summer road use +few tracks days or leave the MPSS on??

Hi,

What would the veteran R35 owners advise, Put some Toyo R888 on for the Summer including a few track days, or leave the MPSS on???

Just worried as I dont know how good the R888 would be, if its a lashing down or even in light rain? as I use it as a daily.

Think the r888 are passable in the wet and you can drive on them safely to get you home. Personally I'd stick with the mpss or look at the pilot sport cup 2s.

R888 are fine in damp conditions and wet it's only standing water or if it's hammering it down.

I would defo run 2 sets of tyres firstly to preserve your MPSS for the road and secondly you will prefer the grip of R888 on track.

I actually prefer R888 when slightly damp as keeps temps down which was a problem on Evos and I would imagine more so on GTR

If it is above 7 degrees Toyos are great. Watch out for torrential rain and standing water same for any other very high performance tyre. Mpss are awful on track IMHO and nowhere near as good on a dry road. Downside to r888 is the sound of a helicopter following you. The tyres are not quiet! I personally like that movie but Adamantium would hate it

Incidentally I'm putting r888s on for summer as we speak

Been having same argument with myself recently as Bridgies are down to not good on inside edges. MPSS are en route shortly as road use they are safer (standing water) and I don't track other than Asda Day really - plus £400 a set cheaper which is a chunk! £500 with £100 free fuel offer currently.

thanks folks for all the input, are the mpss really that bad on track, what makes them bad?? OR as a track noob wouldn't i really notice?? is it really worth paying around 1k for spare R35 alloys, and another £1400 for x4 r888s, plus hassle of changing them over etc, for just for a few track days and the summer 3-4 months????

Will the R888s be able to handle some wet weather that we might encounter over the next few months? I think it's finally time I changed over from the Bridgies to put some power down.

I have not used the r888s on the GTR, but had them on my previous track Impreza and they were good in the wet, however they were still new and the tread is a lot less and will wear quite quickly. The noise however was a killer on the road, just too much!

MPSSs are not that bad on track - when they start to scream go harder and faster

I would not run R888s on the road, but my car is only 600bhp

On all the Evos I've owned

R888 were fine in the wet it's just if there is standing water with such and extreme tread pattern it cannot get rid of the water underneath the tyre sufficiently enough so there is a risk of aquaplaning.

To put into context

Did a wet track day at bedford Evo 9 with R888 window wipers were needed 40 + cars going around but still not enough to dry track out until late afternoon.

I was still one of the fastest around the track the only thing that was remotely close was a cayman S not a fast car but handles great but they still couldn't keep up with the R888 they develop so much more grip than a standard road tyre that even in moderate rain the increased grip level is higher than the wet performance of a standard road tyre.

Opinion only the MPSS are a great road tyre and there is the problem stick some real heat into it and it will go off quickly and understeer and ruin your day as every area of the car will be effected braking,Corning,acceleration and what is a trackday for other than to lose the restraints of road driving

I personally will not buy another set of wheels just get tyres swapped over couple of days beforehand for yourself buy tyres if you like the R888 buy another set of wheels and flog them on when you sell car.

The MPSS are OK on track to be honest.
They are not the best tyre for the job, but it depends if you are there to chase lap times or have fun.

I tracked my MY11 about 5 times on MPSS and it was great fun.
Being non runflats without stiff sidewalls like the 888s the car does move around a bit so you have a good idea what it's up to.

In some ways it's good because on 888s you and the car will be experiencing noticably more cornering g, which can mean more wear and tear on the car.

A GT-R on MPSS is still a quick car.
Question is, do you want the extra 2 or 3 seconds per lap?

If so then just put the 888s on.
They are fine for road use and in the rain as long as you drive according to the conditions.
They just don't like to be cold or standing water.

Where can you get a spare set of alloys for £1k?

I'm looking to get some r888's on a spare set of alloys for track days.

This has been discussed a few times over the past 3 years!
I personally run Toyo 888's in the summer and MPSS in the winter. I have four sets of wheels with a variety of Toyo's and MPSS and Dunlop on for different occasions.

Anyone think the new pilot sport cup 2s could be all things to all men?

The original pilot sport cups were surprisingly good in the wet, maybe these will be a better all round compromise.

Ive ran both the R888 and MPSS and the R888 are hands down better on the track. MPSS trumps them everywhere else.
