Turbo upgrades and photo

Morning, hope you've all had a pleasant long weekend.

Got my car back after sending it away to ACSpeedtech for some treats.
Weather was nice on Saturday so took it for a good blast and then took a few photos experimenting with light painting.

Upgrade history:
(stages refer to order in which the upgrades were done)

Stage 1
Russ Fellows Y Pipe and rear section
Cobb map by ACSpeedtech

Stage 2
ACSpeedtech intakes + K&N filters
New Cobb map

Stage 3
Russ Fellows down pipes
Asnu Injectors
HKS Blow off valves
Bespoke ECUtek map

Stage 4
Asnu fuel pumps
Owen Development Turbos
Bespoke ECUtek map RR4 + 9 hours of mapping

Each time it's had an upgrade there has been an incredible difference in the way the car drives but this latest upgrade has made the most amount of difference. I believe there's only my car and one other in the UK running these turbos at the moment.

I can't get in to the serious technical side of how they work but i'm sure Andy will chip in if you need any extra details. All I know is that they are remanufactured in the standard housings.

At stage 3 the car seemed to dump all it's power in quite a small rev band, now...the power is much more linear from 3k to redline and hardly a trace of lag. The turbos seem to spool up seriously fast now.

The 300 odd mile journey back to Cornwall from ACspeedtech was good fun again after the first 60 miles or so of 30 - 40mph stop start M6 nonsense. But that was a good test to see how well it behaved during normal commuting and it was spot on. New gearbox firmware is better than ever and you would have no idea of the amount of power lurking under the hood until you gun it.

Once the roads cleared I had chance to see what it could do and it's pretty amazing, even a bit scary how quickly it accelerates with virtually no effort. Before it felt like I was caning the turbos under full load, now it feels more like a walk in the park and you have to keep a close eye on the speedo as license loosing speeds could creep up unnoticed in the blink of an eye.

Sound: I can honestly say i've never heard so many cool sounds from one car! It was fun before with loud pipes + intakes + BOV but now it's added a kind of jet engine sound when the turbos spool up or down. Coming to a complete standstill in town you can easily hear them winding down for a good few seconds.

With RR4 comes rolling launch which is pure fun on a stick. I also asked Andy to add me a pops and bangs map. I know this is a bit marmite for some people but i'm still a kid (well, just less than 40) and it makes me smile a lot. Went out for a blast last night and could actually see the road lighting up with flames in the mirror. The great thing about this is it can be so easily turned off if ever I grow up.

I've had this car for just over 1 year now which is longer than any other car i've owned but I just can't see anything else on the market i would swap it for right now. Massive thanks to Andy again for looking after it and spending the time to get the tune perfect as well as going to extra mile to fix somebody else's bodge job.

I'm going out for another blast and say goodbye to another tank of fuel.

Cheers,
M

Looks great and sounds fun. How did you find the change from cobb to ecutek?

Nice!
Do you know roughly what kind of bhp/torque you're making?

This flames and pops and bangs. Sound like I'm going to enjoy mine when I pick her up in the week.

So much more refinement not to mention the extra toys like rolling launch etc. I think the biggest advantage though is that it gives more scope for the tuners to do their thing.

Should be about 720bhp and limited to 650 torques to prevent engine from bending. These OD turbos have much more left to go if I decide to have the engine built in the future.

Great picture and thanks for the write-up!

Really glad you like the turbos, they certainly make a huge difference to every way the car performs, even over the others I've used in the past. Very happy with the results, the peak numbers don't do them justice as its the spool and the transient boost that is so impressive I found. Thoughts mirrored by the other R35 owner running them that I mapped up last week too.

Careful of the rolling launch... It's addictive!

Thanks again!
Andy

I just used a cheap LED lamp I had hanging around. The key is to take several long exposures lighting different parts of the car then mixing them in photoshop afterwards. This was my first attempt and you can see I should have lit the bonnet a bit more.

Good fun...there's a few good tutorials on youtube that will help. Search for light painting a car.

If I could get insurance for a decent price I'd be all over a turbo upgrade, shame living in Manchester rules out all the specialist insurance companies.

Good news....I made my car go faster. Will this affect my premium?

Almost certainly sir

That's great, how much less will I be paying now?

It's more likely your premium will go up sir.

Really? But I made it safer!

Erm, how is it safer now sir?

Well, if I see an accident, I can accelerate away from it faster now.

OK.

And....it's louder so people can hear me coming and get out of the way more efficiently.

I see

Finally, I'm spending much more time at petrol stations. Crashes rarely happen at petrol stations. Logically, my premium should be lower now don't you think?

Sir, I don't think we can continue to offer you car cover.
