Sat Nav WNRO Update this Sunday!

Is anyone else aware that there is a WNRO (Week Number Roll Over) this Sunday which will probably affect all Sat Navs in cars that are not nearly new?

I am not sure how long cars have been using the latest firmware but certainly older cars could find they have issues. See this:

"The GPS Week Number Rollover (WNRO) occurs every 19 years, with the next roll over taking place on 6 April 2019. Similar to odometers in older cars rolling over from 99,999 km to 0, the GPS WNRO is the resetting of the GPS calendar back to 0.

When the calendar resets, it can cause a miscommunication between GPS satellites and GPS receiver chips. As a result, some chips in satnavs will lose the ability to process certain functions.

What does this mean for you? Itís time to check your satnav. Depending on your device, you may need to update or upgrade."

So does this mean we all have to update our software?

It's a real pain on the GTR as I think it takes several DVD's and several hours of leaving the car with the engine running!

Anyone know what this really means?

Thanks

I think its going to be a case of wait and see, and hoping everything is OK (a bit like the Y2K bug). What is for sure, is that this isn't some sort of April 1st hoax - the technology that existed best part of 20 years ago relies ran on fewer bits than now, and 1024 weeks is therefore the maximum time that the 10 integers allows. Mind you I make that more than 19 years, but I'm sure someone has done the maths.

It's only 1 DVD for the firmware (the other 4 are map update DVDs).

If your battery is healthy you don't need the engine running. Just the ignition on.

I know this is an old(ish) thread now, but I'm curious to know if anyone has had any problems with their SatNav due to the WNRO "issue"? I've got a 2010 GT-R running Sat Nav date 2009 v1 and its been absolutely fine, so hopefully our cars weren't affected??

I can't comment on R35 sat nav as I own a R32 but I use a TomTom Go 630 sat nav and received an update invitation from TomTom to avoid the WNRO issue. I ignored it and the sat nav worked fine after the 6th up until mid morning on the 21st when it lost GPS signal and no longer worked! I did the update and it is working fine again now
