1200 BHP project build

Bought my MY10 R35 GTR in 2014.

In 2016, JM Imports built the car from a stage 2 into 1000 BHP daily driver.

The basic ingredients were as follows:-

Litchfield Borg Warner 7163 Turbo Kit

Short engine

Willall sump

CNC Stage 2 Heads with Ferrea big valves.

Gas flowed Greddy inlet plenum

AT Power throttle bodies

Custom intercooler piping and cold air inlets

Assembled engine

The engine Dyno’d at 842 Wheel BHP at 6,700 RPM with 1.8 bar boost on pump fuel, so something around 1000 engine BHP.

I mostly use the car as a daily driver, but occasionally use it in anger at the likes of TOTB where it has run 9.72 seconds Ό mile at 146 MPH using E50 fuel.

I have been feeling a tinkering itch and wanted to see if it was possible to extract a bit more power from the existing set-up.

Back down to JM Imports and the engine is currently out.

Here is one of the existing Litchfield 71mm compressor covers fitted to the Borg Warner turbos.

Here is the new larger compressor cover I am planning to fit to test whether there is more power available from the 7163 turbos.

First compressor cover mock up on the engine.

Compressor cover under construction at JM imports.

Excited to see what the outcome is.

Watch this space as the build continues.

Lovely car and awesome project. I think if I had an r35 I’d go to JM.

JM Imports have lots of big power cars under their belt Nick, so once you downsize your portfolio, would be definitely something to consider.

Lovely setup, didn't realise you were running 7163s, interested to see what else can be pushed from them

Are you running Syvecs or Ecutek?

I am on Syvecs Tin.

It's quite hard to judge what is possible from different Turbo setups.

On my R34 GTR, I had several different turbo setups. Finally, I went for small turbine housings which were an option on the HKS 3037S setup I was running.

There was a suggestion that I had gone too far, yet the car was easy to drive and would pull 156MPH on the 1/4 at TOTB.

The above is a bit of a trial the other way going for a bigger more open compressor housing.

I am pretty confident it will lift the power, but less certain how it will affect the spool.

Time will tell if the turbos work well with these compressor covers dtox.

I will end up with something similar to the Garrett GT3076R Turbocharger wheel sizes, which I believe is the turbo that AMS use in the Alpha 10 kit they sell.

Hopefully they will retain the good spool that the EFR turbos are known for.

Not experienced any other EFR turbos Nick, fingers crossed since there is a ton of work to modify the compressor covers and then plumb the intercooler in.

Am changing to a slightly smaller inlet plenum at the same time, so plenty to do for the JM Import team.

Wanted to update you with a little more progress on the modifications to the Borg Warner EFR turbos.

Some more mocking up on the Drivers side Turbo.

Great care being taken to keep the compressor outlet bends flowing smoothly and minimise direction change while allowing the gasses to expand.

First mock-up on the passenger side

Final mock-up prior to splitting the outlet pipe to aid installation.

The previous Turbo inlet pipe was limited to 2.5" at the Turbo.

The new 4” Turbo inlet piping is planned to run forward to the front of the car to improve air flow to the Turbo, which will hopefully lift power further.

Apologies,

Been mega busy recently.

Good news is the build is well on the way to completion.

I went with the HKS 12 injector option for the plenum.

There are still some bits and pieces to be done over the next couple of weeks.

Thought you might like a sneaky peek at progress on the Dyno

The car is very easy to drive, with 900 Wheel ft lbs of torque by 4200 RPM.

Maximum power so far is 1025 Wheel BHP at 6640 RPM.

Depending on who's correction factor you look at, this is between 1205 and 1240 engine BHP.

Look forward to getting the final results in the near future.
