Trackers and Insurance

So in anticipation of buying a GTR in the next few weeks I have been looking at insurance.
Current car is a 370z Nismo, 13 years NCD.
I plan to keep the car standard initially, but may get a y-pipe and back box in the future.

Got a quote back from Keith Michaels for £1700 which they said will cover modifications but will require a Tracker.

Through a comparison site, the cheapest I found was LV= for £1350.
Doesn't seem to mention anything about a tracker, although not sure how much extra they will charge for mods.

Of all the cars I've looked at, only one has a Tracker fitted.
So just curious how many of you have one fitted to your own GTR? and whether your insurers have insisted on having one fitted.

I was planning to get the Ghost Immobiliser rather than a Tracker.

Most GTRs have trackers fitted from new but they are often not activated. I've never bothered with mine. A lot of insurance companies do insist on them but Admiral/Elephant don't - have you tried them?

If you want to check whether a GTR has one start the car up and you will hear a funny, quite loud clicking noise from the rear - that's the tracker.

I have both Ghost and a Tracker. Insurance insisted on the tracker, but I was within a policy so will have to suck it up this year.

The Ghost isn't Thatcham approved, but my insurance did want proof of instillation, so they may see the benefit.

Most insurance companies will request some type of tracker on keyless cars nowerdays unfortunately because they can be taken in seconds through key cloning or eobd theft method. The ghost system if fitted to the high standard like we do is currently the best form of security. If you need any advice feel free to contact me 07973733441

Bear in mind that if the car you are looking at has a Tracker unit already fitted that is over 4 years old you'll find Tracker UK insist you put a new one in before they'll sell you the subscription. They will say the battery in it is putting out no (or a weak) signal and so you'll need to get a new one fitted.....

Also consider if you might use it on track when you are thinking about insurance as some insurers apparently can include some track use. Insurance for single track days is erm well everyone else knows, except noobie me. costly to say the least.

I have to admit I thought I would never go on track but now I own one I really want to lots and lots and lots pmsl, think about this carefully as part of your calculations imo.

I'm with LV= declared as no tracker fitted, but still paying about half what you've been quoted - car garaged in a rural village.

But no mods, so I can't speak as to how that would affect things.

Talk to Dan at Paceward.

Definitely the most understanding of modified GTRs.

Was with admiral but went more then +25% power increase and they didn't want to touch it after that.

This ^^

I was also with Admiral on multi-car (had been for years and years......) bu they wouldn't touch it last year if the ECU was modified - underwriters not interested. So I went with Paceward instead for a great price

Controversial but how would an insurance inspector know the car had been remapped?

They count a modified ECU as Ecutek, Cobb remaps etc....

LV told me they don't insure the GTR, (am with them for my other car) so was shocked to read above! Ended up with Admiral for this first year.

I didn't want a Tracker on my car as I prefer the Ghost. Admiral were happy to cover the car on that basis and were v competitive at c. £800 for a 4.25 modified spec.

Admiral donít ask for a tracker anyway. I didnít install a tracker as the ongoing costs of the tracker are more than double the discount that Admiral give you for having one. It simply isnít economic and if my car was stolen I donít want it back or vandalised because it canít be stolen.

I guess the tracker discount may vary in high risk areas however.

Personally I believe insurance companies vary in their requirements of security based on many different factors, vehicle, area, age and possibly if any previous thefts claims are registered against you.

I insured mine with AIB, cheapest quote i had and didn't need a tracker, insured for stage 4.25.
Most other companies did require a tracker.

I found LV by far the cheapest when I purchased... They don’t require a tracker.. Roughly about £1k a year for a standard car.

Admiral do a good deal on multi car with no tracker requirements but like all things these days spend a few hours getting quotes and making some phone calls.

I have just renewed. The track insurance is such a gift. £50k of cover for £0. My premium fell £800 and I get 6 track days. Previously I was quoted £1000 for one day of cover while under tution!!!! These people understand that you are as serious as they are not racing a souped up mini.
