Thought it was about time I posted some pics of my GTR. Had it now for around 6 months so you could say I've been a bit lazy in the pic department :chuckle: :chuckle: .
Anyway, here goes....
Not very arty-fart but gives you the jist of how it looks. As you can see, I've removed the 'Skyline anniversary' sticker off the boot lid to make it look a bit cleaner
As far as the exterior goes, I only intend to add a Nismo boot lip and that will be it as I love the look of an R32 with N1 body 'kit'.
No underbonnet shots yet i'm afraid as I thought id wait until I get my Tomei Fuel rail and braided hoses fitted which will tart things up a bit :chuckle:
Managed to 'arrange' some time in the garage (unusual for a Sunday) and got cracked on...
Fitted the passenger door, polycarb and mirror....
As with the drivers door, i made up some plates for the inside to reinforce the hinge area...
The fit of the windows is excellent and I paid particular attention to getting them to fit under the weatherstrip. Should prevent any air (wind) from getting into the leading edge and forcing the windows out like some have experienced.
Also took the time to fettle the door striker plates so they now open and close in a fashion that resembles stock :chuckle: When they were both on, I applied my competition number backgrounds ..
Now looks 'Motorsport' :chuckle:
Centre console fitted along with some edging I decided to go for....just smartens it up a bit as well as protecting the edges...
As I still had a bit of time left, I grabbed a bit of 4mm mild steel plate and fabricated it to facilitate the mounting of my proportioning valve. I inclined it a bit towards the driver in the spirit of ergonomics ....
Just need to plumb it and we're sorted.
Another good day!!
On another note, using some Mindmap stuff at work and decided to apply it to the car to get a sense of what's happening when. Very useful and in an easy to view format.
Gives you an idea of whats in my mind. Some bits are high-level while others are a bit more detailed (perhaps a bit too much). Its more a working document and things get deleted as and when completed.
Anyway...roll on the next garage episode
Finally got fed up with arseing about with dodgy tools so bought a genuine Deutsch HDT-48-00.
With the amount of Deutsch crimping I intend to do it'll be money well spent. In keeping with my nose for a bargain, I managed to get these for £50!!! They retail new at over £200 so I'm happy...tested them and they work as if they were new!!
Also got myself an MSA rain light...
and was given a set of alloy OMP pedals by a mate...
Had a couple of spare hours yesterday so got around to fitting the lower main hoop brace for the cage. Had to relocate my battery box a couple of inches forward of its current location which meant seats out etc. *sigh*
So, loads to be getting on with this weekend....as well as sorting out the wiring for the centre console switches, bulbs and fuses....Joy!!!
This weekend has been a bit light on effort compared to previous ones.
Managed to get OMP pedals fitted, rain light fitted and wired into the centre console, proportioning valve all plumbed in (I replaced all the rear brake lines while I was there!!).
I also took the time to remove my fuel cooler and duct....I have never been overly comfortable with how low it sits to the tarmac. So, I removed it all and did a bit of cutting and modifying and voila...it now sits just above the exhaust line and should be out of harms way
On another note, I have decided to start a second, more long-term project of building myself a 2.1 Cosworth YB form bits sourced off the net. I've decided to purposely buy bits and pieces i.e bare block, bare head etc as opposed to complete assemblies as I think a bit of modding here and there will be in order :chuckle:. Aim is to get a complete, working unit built up on the engine stand over, say 18 months...really not looking to fire it all together in a big hurry. Should be fun.
Car is looking awesome! Do you think you could paint and use Fibreglass door cards on a road car or in the leash is it obvious that they're fibreglass?
Are you talking about putting F/G door cards on std doors? The reason I ask is that my F/G door internal was flat and had a flange so the doorcard would sit flush. On a std door you would have to have a moulded section which followed the contours of the door innards, especially if you intended to use the std interior trim pieces such as door pull etc.
I would say this WOULDN'T be straightforward on a road car, especially if you were looking for a reasonable level of finish.
Over this weekend I have not been too productive (well, not on the GTR front anyway!! )..
Replaced the blue switch on my steering wheel as I found that, when testing for continuity, it failed. It seems I had fried it when soldering the wires :chairshot. So, new switch acquired and soldered by a mate (who's soldering is WAY better than mine )
As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I am looking to build myself a mix-and-match Cosworth YB from bits I can pick up cheaply...Already got an Escort cam cover and Sierra 4x4 plenum....
The plenum has been modified to accept Toyota coil-on-plug packs and has a rear breather which is what I wanted anyway. Also, despite my thinking that this was going to be VERY long-term, I have already secured a '200' block (the more desirable 4WD one), 4WD head and throttle body for a whopping £385 (yup, £385 for block, head and TB!! from separate vendors though)....not bad for a weeks work :squintdan. That's about £1600's worth of parts there....I kind of feel like a thief
I will probably start another build thread just for the engine in case anyone's interested. Don't want to fill this one up with crazy Ford stuff!! As an aside, on doing some research into YB's it made me laugh just how cheap 4 pot parts are compared to Skylines and how 'backward' they are technology-wise. Seems most stick like glue to ancient Pectel management when FAR better stuff exists. My intention is to use some of my techy knowledge when it comes to parts etc for this motor.
Next GTR jobs involve wiring...such as Dash 2, injector loom and coil loom. If im honest, Im putting these jobs off as I HATE wiring but I suppose I should just bite the bullet, get it done and stop whining!! :chairshot
For those interested, I have started a new Cosworth YB build thread HERE...
No workings on the GTR planned for this weekend . Although I MAY get on and mould a composite housing for my Dash2 race dash. We'll see what happens...
MK 1 shape fully space framed double wishbone front suspension.

Well, with not much happening on the GTR I decided I MUST have a sandblasting cabinet (as you do!!:chuckle
Quick trip down to B&Q saw me armed with some construction materials. Got an idea of what I wanted off the net and knocked up the basic structure over the weekend......
Decided to use downlighters as cabinet lighting.....should do the job!
Looking good so far....
Got some shiny MDF which I will fabricate the media catcher (at the bottom) from. Just need to make the front door and cut out a hole for the glass.
Should be a useful addition to the garage I reckon although its gonna take up a far bit of space
1. Save for ECU
2. Finish buying additional ECU sensors (Lambda, AMT crank trigger kit, water pressure sensor)
3. Buy ID1000 injectors
4. Make a new injector and coil pack loom
and that's about it at the moment. There are the brakes to swap for the Wilwoods but I reckon that can wait until the car has actually seen the track a couple of times
so, not that much going on GTR-wise other than saving for Syvecs...hence my building Cossie YB's and sandblasting cabinets :chuckle::chuckle:
Thanks for the words of motivation though :bowdown1:
Holes cut for glove mounts....
Managed to get Sealey glove mount (spares for their own range of blasting cabinets). Due to me misunderstanding their website, I only ordered 1 when I thought I had ordered 2. That problem now resolved and the other should be with me soon......
Also created a trap for the blast media.....
Will cut a round hole in the bottom for a bit of 70mm alloy pipe I have lying around. This will funnel the media into a bucket, or similar, underneath....
Got some stainless ball-bearing hinges for the front up-and-over door and fitted them. Just need to go and buy some wood for said door, some glass for the viewing window and some sort of grate to act as a shelf (whilst allowing the media to fall through underneath) and we're just about done!!
Thanks Malc....bit of a jack of all trades :chuckle:
I stop at mapping though . I GET the theory but without hands-on experience, I can't see myself getting to grips with it at all!
Indeed, it is all in my garage (which is rapidly running out of room!!)
Been neglecting the GTR of late...sandblasting cabinet and Cosworth YB build taking time. Also just bought a 52 plate Clio for my eldest daughtet which needs some minor fettling prior to her getting her hands on it!
That said, been studying the wiring diagrams and getting it clear in my head how I want to wire the injectors/coils packs. To that end got myself some Raychem 12/14AWG wire and will be getting stuck into that shortly.
Finally managed to get some time over the weekend to do some stuff on my own car!! Been helping a mate over the last few months rebuild his little Fiesta RST and have been spending some time getting that finished!!
Decided that I wanted to fit my Race Technology Dash2 and so I knocked up a carbon surround/mount.....
Reasonably pleased with it although I DID manage to damage a bit (just to the left of the dash!) and had to repair it. Nevertheless it does the job and was designed so that the dash is recessed into its own little aperture and is semi-flush.
Next thing I did was (with some of the excess carbon sheet that I made for the dash) make a small mount for the Deutsch receptacle. This is for plugging the steering wheel into allowing the buttons to function and operate dash.
Not sure whether the TSC will stay there or be moved to the centre console...will have a think about that later...
Wiring the Dash itself is pretty straightforward as all the data will be taken from the ECU via CANbus. That just leaves the basics i.e. power, ground, switches and stuff like alternator light and sidelight warnings etc
OK, so the things like indicator, brake warning, sidelight warning etc are not wired yet....but the important bits like power and ground are done
Happy with the way it looks and operates...(still annoyed about the broken bit on the left but hey-ho..that's the way it is!!)
As a bonus, the dash sits perfectly under the rim of the steering wheel so nothing is obscured.
A bit of luck and good judgement there in equal measures I reckon :chuckle:
Looking good from the outside too!!!...
Just need to tidy everything away once the electricals are complete.
Also took the time to update the firmware on both Dash2 and DL1 logger so they're both current. I reckon it'll take me some time to customise the screens to the way I want them but I'm sure it'll be fun.
Sooo glad this is now done as I've had the Dash and logger for about 18 months now hidden in a cupboard gathering dust. It's good to see them in, powered up and working!!
This means that my 320kph Nismo dash is up for sale (£100) (THIS thread)
Awesome, I'm in the process of finally getting to fitting my Racepak dash too, should look similar to yours when finished, although I will have to add indicator and warning lights etc being a road car.
One thing though, what are you doing to get around the speed sensored power steering? Or are you just going to have heavy steering in the slow corners?
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
