Thought it was about time I posted some pics of my GTR. Had it now for around 6 months so you could say I've been a bit lazy in the pic department :chuckle: :chuckle: .
Anyway, here goes....
Not very arty-fart but gives you the jist of how it looks. As you can see, I've removed the 'Skyline anniversary' sticker off the boot lid to make it look a bit cleaner
As far as the exterior goes, I only intend to add a Nismo boot lip and that will be it as I love the look of an R32 with N1 body 'kit'.
No underbonnet shots yet i'm afraid as I thought id wait until I get my Tomei Fuel rail and braided hoses fitted which will tart things up a bit :chuckle:
Been busy removing rad/intercooler etc for install of Ross damper and trigger kit....
Also been rewiring my fuel pump relays and switches as the original setup didnt allow for ECU control. Been humming and hawing about a water/meth kit (Coolingmist)....I'm thinking that it'd probably be best to install it now and have car mapped on good old Tesco99 WITH a water/meth mix. Liking the whole idea of it so watch this space...
Other than that theres not much else been going on....most of my garage time recently has been spent preparing the X5 and Megane for their MOT's.. Now I can concentrate on GTR again
Unfortunately it looks like the original power steering belt is now too short so had to order another, shorter one. Used Simply Bearings who have a HUGE range at good prices. Shame Ross don't bother to let you know this in advance!
Also cracked on with fitting the lovely Deutch AS connector for the lambda.....
Its a LOT smaller than I thought it would be but sexy nonetheless!!! Got some shrink boots and Raychem 22AWG Spec-55 wire as well as I had to make up some tails for the connector....the lambda wire was a good bit thicker than the terminals would accomodate. I have it on very good authority that this is kosher in respect of currents etc so I'll go with it...
Next problem that has sprung up is in the cooling department!! With the balancer and dry sump mandrel attached there is NO WAY the original viscous fan assembly will be able to rotate freely so it looks like I will now need electric fans. Had a look around and have, kind of, decided on a kit from Summit Racing.....
The handy thing about these is that they come with a shroud which, happily, exactly fits the core of my rad. I'll have to cut out a small bit between the fans for the dry sump mandrel but that's a small price to pay IMHO.
The light at the end of the tunnel is getting a bit dimmer again I reckon!!.....
On the PAS belt situation, I had measured what I thought to be an appropriate size of belt at 950mm. Turns out its STILL too long so I then ordered a 925mm 4-rib belt which fits perfectly. ...This one HERE which at around £12 delivered aint bad value. Just a bit of info should folks want some easy to find belts!!!
With the belt sorted I turned my attention to the fan. Decided against the twin fan setup I mulled over before and ordered a Pacet 13" Profan (PF1311) for just over £100 delivered. I will use 1 mounted on the offside of the rad, driven by the ECU and see how I get on. Should I need a second (which I think unlikely) then it will fit in easily on the nearside.
Still arsing about with wiring but at least THIS bit of the project is near an end....
thanks for your advice about the belt mate.... i want to fit my ross pulley asap and with your help i hope that it will be a straight fitment....
No problem!!
Just so theres no misunderstanding, I am using the Ross MJ 'Race' damper with underdriven PAS. I suspect the dampers with std size PAS pulleys will be fine with the original size.
Well...had a bit if a setback with the electric fan....
Ordered the Pacet fan as I mentioned above but after around a month of waiting got in touch with the supplier. Long story short, I got a refund but was then back at square one in the fan choice. What was worse was that it seems that Pacet have gone out of business.
Ended up ordering a Kenlowe from Demon Tweeks which should be here imminently which I will fit ASAP.
Also ordered a set of ID1000 injectors which is symbolic in that it signifies the last MUST BUY item this side of the ECU. Now all available funds can go towards it.
Used Kenlowe years ago on both my MKII Escort rally cars without drama. I cant see why the 14" fan I bought wouldn't do the job.
I HAD looked at the whole range from Summit and had pretty much decided on a twin setup from Derale.....after having a long hard re-think about my cooling requirements I decided that I should be well served by a 14" single. If I have got it wrong then I can easily fit another 14" on the other side....no biggie!!
I think the Summit stuff is really good and have bought a good few things from them without issue. Even with import duty added into the equation, their prices are still VERY competitive.
So, fitting the fan turned out to be a drama......surprise, surprise! Every job seems to be a nightmare at the moment....
Turns out I had a bit of a brain fart with the fan. The one I had ordered previously was a tapered design with it being 35mm at the edge and increasing to 60-odd mm at the centre. The NEW fan I ordered, the Kenlowe one, turns out to be around 60-odd mm right across its diameter. this meant that there was NO WAY that it could be accommodated behind the radiator which was where I wanted it. On the plus side, with a little fettling, it JUST fits in front beside the oil cooler!!..
rather tight but they both fit. The fan is touching the rad so the spill is reduced.
Just need to secure the top of the fan (which I'm in the process of making brackets up for) and the oil cooler and I can get it all connected and refilled with water. Then I have the joy of wiring it all up!!
Missed the courier today so I shall pick up my injectors tomorrow too. If I'm feeling motivated I'll have both jobs done!!

What way is that fan going to blow?
Based on the pic it looks like it is going to suck air through the radiator, in a forwards direction with respect to the car.
This might adversely the airflow through the radiator if it operates when you are moving forward.
Of course it is more for when you are stationary, it should be ok then.
LOL...thankfully with the purchase of the fan and the injectors, its ONLY the ECU to get now and have it mapped.
Funnily enough I had toyed with the idea of fitting the GT4094 while it was off the road but I think its better to wait, get the car finished and on the track THEN think about fitting the turbo.
Nice work Scotty!
Just a quick thought, wouldn't it be better if possible to have the cooler the other way around? (Rotated 90degrees) so that the cold return was at the bottom hot feed at the top etc?
For better thermal flow?
I felt that it was 6 and half a dozen TBH.....the pump should easily cope with pushing the oil through the cooler and back up. Its been run up a few times in this configuration with no obvious problems. If I notice temp or pressure issues on track (eventually!!!!) then I will revisit it.
Hope things are good with you matey. Have a good 2014
A bit of tinkering today and the fan is fully fitted!! Just need to wire it up......unfortunately it's a 2-speed fan and there were no wiring instructions so I will contact Kenlowe tomorrow. Normally an electric fan would be a no-brainer but there are 3 wires from the motor, a black (pretty obvious), a grey and an orangey one. Again, it doesn't take a genius to work out that one is low speed and the other is high. A quick battery test would show it but I'd rather have the proper wiring diagram in front of me just in case there are any surprises!!
Picked up the injectors.....
During trial fitting I noticed that the lower seals that come with the injectors are too big to fit into the recesses in the inlet manifold. They LOOK the same as the OEM ones and I originally thought that they would be a snug fit but they are a good bit bigger after careful measurement. You can see them in the pic above.
Looking at some images of ID1000's I see that some come with a fat lower o-ring....
I suppose that could work on an RB26 but I'd personally prefer the thicker rubber seals.
What I then did was use the OEM seals I had which seemed to work out fine. They were tight around the injector body and snug in the manifold. Some of the originals were a bit worse for wear anyway and the rubber had become a bit brittle. I shall order a set of OEM lower seals and go from there..
Anyone who has used ID1000's on RB26 care to tell me what they used on the lower part of the injector?? OEM seals or O-rings??
Surprisingly, the injectors came with plugs (which I hadn't read in the advert)!!. While this was welcome, I had, unfortunately, already bought the correct USCAR connectors months ago in preparation so if anyone would like a set of brand new plugs, pins and seals then get in touch.
Replacement OEM injector seals arrived today so really gagging to get stuck in and get the injectors in, fuel rail back on and fuel hoses attached. Theres a good bit of oxidation under the original seals on the alloy manifold so I'll have to spend a bit of time cleaning that up and making sure the seats wont give any sealing problems.
Have to say though, after speaking with Max Mosam (of Bremax) at Autosport at the weekend about PDU's and suchlike, I can see me going down this road sooner rather than later. I reckon a Motec PDM30 would fit the bill nicely!!. Its pricey but when you take into account the parts and labour of having it professionally rewired with fuses, relays etc then it all starts to make a bit more economic sense not to mention the whole host of other benefits a PDU solution offers!!!
Was out at the garage earlier doing some tidying and decided I couldn't wait any longer so got stuck in fitting the injectors and rail.....
Injectors in along with new OEM lower seals.
Rail on and tightened.
Just need to reconnect the rail feeds and return and terminate the injector plugs and that's another job put to bed!!
Next item is the fan!!
Spoke to the guys at Kenlowe the other day and they were very helpful indeed! The 3 wires (Black, Grey and Orangey/Brown) are wired in such a way in that black is earth (obvious!), Grey feeds the low speed circuit and Orange brown feeds the high speed circuit. Thing is though that for the high speed to work, the low speed still has to be energised. As I ONLY want high speed operation, I will need to join the Grey and Orange wires and connect them to the relay with 8AWG wire. Not a massive sweat as I had purchased a 30A fused relay. However I bought a relay holder and the uninsulated terminals wont accomodate the 8AWG wire!! Will have to have a look and see if someone does compatible terminals!!
Im starting to feel like I'm making progress again at last!!!:clap:
Are your injectors high or low impedence Scotty?
If they're are the same as mine I has to delete the injector resistor and join up all of the wires to complete the circuit.
Just worth checking bud.
I have already removed the ballast pack and rewired the entire injector loom (keep up!!! :chuckle so hopefully there should be no dramas in that respect.
However, I reserve the right to make monumental ****-ups when it comes to wiring just to cover myself :chuckle:
Managed a bit of garage time today which saw the injector plugs terminated, the intercooler and the bumper back on....
Glad the fuel systems all back together again! It seemed like a backward step removing the rail etc but now I have some nice new 1000cc injectors, plugs and wiring so I'm in a much better place!.....
A small modification to the wiring cover to allow new wiring some extra protection...
Replaced the breather and fuel return hoses and voila!!, back to some sort of normality under the bonnet.....
Once I had sorted all that lot out I finished repositioning the oil cooler (slightly right of where it was originally due to the new leccy fan) and refitting the intercooler...
Looks a bit busy down there but I reckon I shouldn't have any cooling issues on track! Got the bumper back on and just have to fabricate a centre stay for the intercooler seeing as the original centre support is now gone. This also meant that I had to reposition the horn which now lives under the radiator drain plug :chuckle:
All looks back to normal!.....
Next few jobs are just silly things really like wiring the fan, sorting out a new fuel cooler air feed scoop (as the alloy bell-mouth I got sits too low). Will get a low-profile rectangular one like this.....
At Autosport I caught up with the guys from Race Technology...have been having slight issues with my dash and logger so will have to send them both back for diagnostics. Having cast an eye over the new Dash2 Pro, should my dash and logger be deemed as U/S then I might get a Pro which has logging on board as well as a CAN link for ECU. Very nice bit of kit but we'll see what's wrong with my current stuff first.
Lastly, I have bought myself a steel single-piece prop. Its something I've toyed with for a while now and I'm glad this one came up when it did. Should get that picked up next week and fitted soon after. Shame its not carbon but I'll see how I get on with this one..
TT
