"Steel" turbos have a hex (6 sided) bolt head, ceramics have a double hex?? (12 sided) nut.

Do a search, ther are plenty of photos showing this

NOT Magnetic ;)

I checked out the (steel) turbine wheel of a turbo that was lying around, and indeed it was not magnetic! I did know it was a special allow, but didn't know it was not magnetic (inconel)

cheers

Sorry to be a pain guys but i still can't tell, i do know that the bolt head has 6sides on it. does that make it steel? it looks very similar to that second picture alex has put up. i'll try to get some better quality pictures.

Thank you

for what it's worth, the ceramic turbine is a complete casting. the shape that looks like a nut isn't actually a nut, it's part of the impeller. if you look carefully at the compressor and turbine ends, the inlet wheel can be removed if the steel nut is removed, whereas the exhaust wheel (if it's ceramic) cannot. i took one of my standard turbos apart to see how it worked (since it was leaking oil, thought it was fit for scrapper anyway - it could have been exchanged, valuable lesson learned there!) and got down to the rotate-able(?) shaft. this sits on my desk in work as a souvenir.

hope this helps.
