This rattle, which is not always present, comes from the area around the short shift gear leaver. Sometimes it stops when the plastic facia surround is pushed down; depressing the clutch does't stop the noise. The main clue, however, is that it is only present starting from cold for the first roughly six miles; after that you don't here it again until you start from cold once more.
Any ideas?

could be related to the short shift? i used to have a B&M short shift, that rattled but was worse until things had warmed up.. i tried lots of things like flashing tape on the shaft to dampen it but nothing worked.
