Surely it's got to be cheaper to just change the bearings than buying whole new top mounts once they start knocking.... Has anyone tried? if so what bearings and how much?

i had the same problem with my teins in my gtst, to cut a long story short i had a play with them and there is a washer you can move etc to lock the pillow ball tops to set them up like a standard shock.
have done this to a few sets now and haven't had any problems(been using mine for over 4yr now set up this way)
will try to take some pic's to show the way they are set up etc if you are interested?

here's a pic of the way i have set mine up to lock the tops.
the thin washer(2mm thick,od 25mm, id 13mm) i had to add sits up in the pillow ball piece.
the rest of the washers and spacers should already be with your shocks
