R33 seems a bit shagged ..... only bought it a month ago :-(

It started making some very strange noises this morning, did not travel far before a stange wailing noise started - a bit like a police siren *check rearview mirror!* Noise is coming from under my bonnet ! Turned round and took it home ( lack of power and noise relative to loud pedal ). Onece home parked it and left it alone ( hoping it might just get better ! ) anyway a couple of hours later tried to start it .... won't even start now :-(

Anyway spoke to Abbey - they were very helpful indeed :) and suggested could be turbo or maybe an intercooler pipe blown off ......

Stripped inner wing and checked pipes ... all seem OK :-( also took airflow meter connections off to try to start to no avail :-(

Took airbox to bits and noticed a little oil residue has made it's way into the box .... So I'm sort of thinking the turbo's are shagged....

So I am looking for advise .... is there an easy way for me to tell if my turbo's are shagged ?

And if they are .....
Should I buy second hand ones ? ( £? )
Should I get mine recon'ed ? (£? )
Should I buy new larger (£? ) engine standard (70k miles) so maybe not a good idea....

Are they easy to change ( i.e. can I do it ? ) how much setup is required after install...?

Thanks in advance
:)

Changing the turbos isn't too hard, I stripped down to mine the other day and re-built, it just takes a while.

As for the air box, you always get a small amount of residue in them, it's usually a mix of rain water collected mixed with filtered fumes from other peoples cars. you probably also notice the same residue around the hard pipe into the inlet manifold.

take it to any garage and get them to do a diagnosis, then speak to a specialist garage like abbey about getting the problem fixed.

hope that's of some help...

blown it

OK thanks.... that does help...

I'm not sure most garages would know where to start to do a diagnosis on a GTR !

You can let them look at it - just don't let them try and fix it!!! It depends on if you've got a specialist nearby - i guess abbey must be quite near you?

Not too bad

Abbey is not too far probably 40 miles...... but that's still a long way when it won't run.... etc

Anybody else got any thoughts on turbos ?

Simon,

Sh1t! :( Really sorry to read about this. For those of you that don't know, Simon bought my old R33. Don't really know what advice to offer about the problem you're having.

Does the car actually run? If there is no white/grey/blue smoke coming from the exhaust, then it's unlikely to be turbos. If the car runs but doesn't have any power, it might be something like a cam position sensor. Had a similar sounding problem on a 22B, and a new sensor sorted it out. Could it be a bearing or something making the whining noise? Clearly I'm not 100% sure what it is, as this never happened to me

As the other guys say, the residue in the airbox is quite normal.

Really hope this problem is easy to sort, as I feel crap reading stuff like this. :(

Cheers
Matt

oh dear.

It's with abbey M/s now... the verdict is that it needs a set of turbo's... as one has lost a fin ...

Simon...

fear not.
I recently got my turbos rebuilt by abbey and they did a grand job.
Go for the steel ones if you can as cost effective and you can run more boost on them.
Just depends on what sort of budget you have. You can go titanium and then big HKS but you have to do lots of other stuff as well.
PM me if you need any help or advise.

Theres an in-built diagnostics check, I cant remember how its done, but someone on here must know! Try searching for it.

Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks for the help....

Nick - as you suggest I have gone for the steel internals ( as Abbey happen to have some on the shelf ) ... I agree it would have been a false economy to do anything else.... I want to keep the car fairly standard so no need ( or budget ) for HKS's.....
Thanks again for the advise

I also trust they will do a grand job.... although in reality nearer two grand

 :)

No probs Simon

Glad my advice is welcomed by SOME!!
well GTR owners anyway...

You have to ask yourself what you want and how far you want to go with the car.
Mine will be running the steels with roller bearings and they spool up so much quicker than the bigger ones. So if liek me, you hate lag, and can be a lazy driver in town or on the motorway, then some of these do not spool up to 3.5-4k.
Plus at 1.2-1.3bar my car is a shade under 500 BHP and it feels so quick off the mark.
That is what I want and where I want to stay. For over 500 you need the bigger turbos to flow the air at high revs.
You will be pleased with the results.

the wailing noise...

hate to alarm you but when my turbos started to go I was getting this high pitched wailing noise and then it turned into a much deeper groaning noice and then it just let go after more and more miles.

So the diagnosis seems to be that air is getting through where it shoudl not be and escaping out. A broken fin would account for the noise and this is what happened on my old set.

Nick,

What else are you running to get close to 500bhp at 1.3 bar (assuming you have stock turbos with steel roller-bearing cores)?

running

bigger cams (264 all round)
HKS intercooler
HKS Oil cooler
HKS hard pipe kit
550cc Injectors
500 ECU with boost controller
Nismo uprated clutch
usual air filters and exhaust mods.
uprated turbos and actuators

that's it I think
