Just purchased my first GTR - 2010 car in Gunmetal Grey with 23K miles - just getting used to it and still at the novelty stage - but absolutely love everything about it so far.

One thing that concerned me at time of purchase though was that the Bell Housing work had never been carried out - so knew that i could be faced with spending some additional money in the near future.

Just wondering if any of you have had Nissan carry out the repair work outside the warranty period - as this is a well documented problem with the car? Or is that a NO GO scenario?

And if not, what do specialists like Litchfield or SVM charge for the priviledge?

Thanks,
I

my car is on 20k and bell housing still good condition also a 2010 but when it needs to be done will let Litchfield do it as they do a uprated bearing for it, I think when Nissan do it they just put the standard one back it of which will fail again.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

That cost sounds much better than i have heard of Nissan dealers charging.

Of course what is more difficult for me is the fact that i live in N.Ireland - so access to Litchfield is more difficult - but prob worth paying for a ferry over.

This is why i was wondering if you know of Nissan dealers ever doing the work on a car that is outside the warranty period free of charge, as it's such a well documented fault?

By the way, Bobby, your car is very simliar spec to mine - only difference is mine has an SVM Cobb stage 1 map.

Ivan

If you're going to be ferrying the car over to Liverpool (I assume) then it'd be quicker going to ACspeedtech in Warrington.

I recently purchased a 2010 model. I was feeling smug as there didn't appear to be any bellhousing noise. Several weeks on and I can hear a noise developing that I believe is the bellhousing rattle. grrr... If it is an issue then I believe it will probably go to litcho for their uprated one as this gets good press. The only other option would be ac speedtech who have a great rep for gearbox stuff although not sure if Andy does an uprated version which kills the problem.

I would recommend you have a browse on the Litchfield and ac speedtech websites as they give an idea of what these things cost and what options are available

I have the Litchfield fix and 14 months and 6k miles on no problems. They did me a deal because I had my gearbox out for a circlip upgrade.

Thanks again for all the replies.

I'll take your advice and contact Litchfields and others to see what they offer.

Looks like a trip on the ferry to Liverpool will be happening in the near future then.

My MY09 has done 30,500 miles and bell housing just starting to show about 1mm of play, with hardly any classic noise. Sly at Kaizer has said still OK for awhile. I'm not being smug, but just pointing out you may not even need replacement straight away.
Good luck anyway, hope you enjoy the car without worrying too much. (HPC s charge a lot for what is a poor fix IMHO)

Mines done 38000 miles and still on the original BH. Seems ok. Always rattled from new anyway. No noise when driving at all.

I just bought a MY11 with 19000 miles and I went with a service and a the years extended warranty with middlehurst as a piece of mind. I noticed that the bell housing was rattling slightly not long after picking the car up but I thought that this was the norm since it had just been checked. Does the noise just get louder after time?

Lots of info on here with search/bellhousing.
Also to save you searching here is a thread that I was on a while ago:
rattling/ grinding sound around 2500 rpm from cat area - Engine - GT-R Life

Pocket summary:
They all rattle to some extent at idle. Worse, some will vibrate a bit at idle too
This is not really something to be too hung up about.
Under the car there can be up to a few millimetres of up down/side to side play in the prop shaft which will cause the noise/vibration to be worse/less.
NHPC will not replace it until there is quite a lot of play and/or associated vibration/grating noises at certain revs
I don't recall any catastrophic failure concerns on threads (please update if anyone knows different)
I had mine replaced as per the thread at around 18K. At 28k it now rattles just as bad (not much vibration though) but only at idle/while it takes up the slack, but there is very little play in the shaft.
When it's hot it can rattle very badly when started until it settles.
I've not got any particular re-occurence of the rasping noise at revs yet but it is feeling slightly more harsh.
It is not something to overly worry about and it is very variable and can last ages before it gets to a really horrible noise/vibration point - if at all, even with some play in the shaft.
Nissan will if they deem necessary replace the part under warranty and have replaced many modded cars bellhousings while they're in warranty - although they told me they'd only do it once while modded.
I don't know of any out of warranty NHPC goodwill replacements (again to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise)
The Indie fixes seem to work ok and since I'm booked in for some more fettling I've decided to replace it anyway, just because the rattle irks me a bit.

Don't overly worry, enjoy the car, only deal with it when it is harsh or when the NHPC will wear it. The Indie fix is about 750 quid.
