I just got back from the Top Gear Live / MPH show at the NEC (present from the Missus!) where I had been 'courted' by all manner of lithe and lovely girls wishing to pusuade me to book myself on a supercar driving experience day. I managed to fob them all off with a 'no thanks, I have GTR!' where necessary, but I did come away thinking that a good, well organised driving experience day could be fun in something truly exotic.

I had a scan through some of the bumpf I'd been given and realised that you're typically expected to spend £80 - £120 for a couple of tutored laps and maybe just 4 laps in something worth trying (ie Lambo, Aston etc). - and I bet there's a serious limit to how hard you can push too!

Now I'd quite like to do a few laps in a Mucialago, but it would have to compare with the experience I had at the 2008 Race Academy at Silverstone where we got around 30mins tearing round the circuit with an instructor on board.

Does anyone know of a proper option - or has anyone had a go at such a thing that they'd recommend to others?

Or do I just stick with the GTR and accept that I'll never get to drive a £200k supercar anywhere near as fast!?

CAT driver training at Millbrook proving ground mate. I've done a few laps on a supercar day in a Murcielago and the instructor got miffed when i chaged down from 4th for a hairpin!!!

Take your GTR to a day with CATDT and you'll never regret it, i promise.

If you really want to see what YOUR supercar can do.

As mentioned above, the supercar experience are more about you having a pootle about a track in the cars, not really for you to grab the bull by the horns and give it some full fat action.

Thanks for the replies, but I am fully aware of the GTR training available at CADT (indeed I've been speaking to Jo about this already). However this is not what I was asking about. They have Lotus Elises, Caterhams and Subarus I think - or I could use my own GTR.

What I was asking about is driving a truly exotic supercar.

MeerKat, Market, Simples!

Ferrari Experience at Thruxton.

Trouble is, you are limited on revs that you can use, etc, on these type of things. My mate recently did a Lambo day somewhere and he said the same.

That's kind of what I thought - but hoped there may be an exception to the rule. Maybe we should club together and get a car on a day's hire (c £1500+ I think). In 24hrs we should be able to get some reasoable value out of it (need to check the mileage clasue though!)

Ive done quite a few of these

Audi TT + Single seaters at brands
Rwd escort cosworth at brands rally stages
Supercar experience at silverstone : audi s3 then viper, 911, 355 and esprit
Supercar experience at thuxton : MG ZF, Boxster ,911 turbo and single seater
206 rally experience at Silverstone

of those i enjoyed the supercar day at Silverstone most but it was quite dear about £400 for what amounted to about 1 hr total on track

911 = bland
355 = sounded good and was nimble in corners but slow
esprit = ageing
viper = awesome torque and surprisingly immense levels of grip

Echoing people feedback that its frustrating not being able to push the cars hard e.g at brands in the TTs they would not let you rev over 5k due to complaints from locals about tyre noise, instructors explained that when it was wet they could push a bit harder

I am biased as im a massive drift fan but the feedback from the customers who attend the drift gift days at santa pod is that they have never had so much fun and loved the fact they were actually told to rev more instead of back off over 5k etc

DriftRacing | Drift Lessons Practice | Drift Experience Days = £175 for a half day gets you alot more actual seat time than the other experiences i have listed

hope that helps

:D

My fellow Evo contributor, Simon George, runs a fleet of supercars for exactly this purpose: 6th Gear Experience, Lamborghini Aston Martin Ferrari Supercar Driving Experiences in the UK

I haven't been, but I believe if you come across as being sensible, the instructors will actively encourage you to drive the cars as intended.

I had a drive of an Ariel Atom with 6th Gear and was encouraged to push it. I must have hit the limiter 6 times in 4 laps without comment from the instructor. Much better than others I have been to where you are told to hold higher gears (some no lower than 4th FFS)

Can recommend the Palmersport day 9 different cars on 6 different tracks with about 10 laps each.Good tuition and encouraged to push hard...About £800 though for a day.

+1
Palmersport is an excellent day out. Expensive, but lots of time in the cars, lots of variation, intructors who actively get you to push the cars and overall superbly well organised so worth the relatively high cost.:thumbsup:
