I have stopped buying car magazines, because they no longer dare to include the Nissan GT-R's in car tests such as "Performance Car of the Year", because they wipe the floor with everything, I suppose it would make boring repetitive reading, GT-R Wins every time, but true, It also makes manufacturers like Ferrari, Porsche etc look obscenely over priced, I would not be surprised when the mags test these cars that they are loaned on conditions, such as not opposite Nissan GT-R's Please! Sorry about my rant , but it also makes me laugh when some people say Gt-R's don't handle because they under-steer, or comment that the gearboxes are weak, when they have not even driven or owned one, any car will wash out(under-steer) if you go deep into a corner carrying to much speed.

I thought the same when I picked up the latest copy of EVO.

Most cars are specifically designed to understeer because its safer for normal folk to handle than oversteer. The natural reaction for many is to simply steer more, with understeer this helps and is safe, with oversteer its far worse, You will find very nearly all modern cars are designed this way, its not really a fault, if the cars going to slide its the safer way to go.

i have noticed a few car reviewers swaying in favour of other cars as they dont handle as well as the gtr and therfore offer more "excitement"...sure i get that the thrill is a part of driving but if i entered a dual i wouldnt bring a water pistol id pick a weapon that gets the job done.

I kinda agree with the points above, but in another respect if the GTR was in ever comparative shoot out we'd probably not complain, so I guess in a way we are biased. I'm not put off by the lack of GTR's in magazines anymore but there does appear to be a constant of at least one Porsche and a fezzer regardless of test....i'd settle for even a few more left of field car choices in these test...the odd niche manufacturer or how about even delving into the tuning houses!!!!

So hang on, what you're saying is that all these magazine journalists who earn prob £15k a year but are flown all over the world business class and with expenses paid by the manufacturers to review their cars don't give an unbiased opinion!!!

Never ;)

The only car magazine I ever bought regularly was "Car Mechanics". If you want to actually learn about cars its the only one to get.

The rest are mostly trash and rather mild porn with rough birds slouching about all over mostly horrible cars.

Magazines bills are paid by advertisers. The cover price might take care of printing and distribution costs. With very few exceptions the biggest advertisers get the best coverage. It's call life.

Guys, open your eyes.

Car mags are not scientific journals with peer reviewed articles.

They may try to give the appearance of pseudo science with lots of data presented, but in the end they are just trying to find stories which will sell the mag.

The R35 is still a world beater, but to all intents and purposes it's a 3 year old car (albeit with some tweaks along the way) and as such, these mags only care about the latest cars released as the very nature of the car industry is constant change to keep the public wanting something new.

The main premise of evo coty is also that the car must have been released this year. I appreciate that we now have significant changes to the GT-R between original launch time and current changes, however, the magazine doesn't view it that way as it's not even recognised as a different edition.

Perhaps when we have V-Spec 2 or NUR or even M-Spec type cars will be perceived as sufficient for review.

I think it's clear that the end of model GT-Rs will be at 100% of potential.. Like most, I'd be very interested in the review of that car - which would make it similar, in concept as the Porsche GT3 RS 4.0

Look at it another way, what else could you spend a fiver on that will give a couple of hours entertainment? It wouldn't get you very far at a pub or anywhere else for that matter.

Personally, I would not want to see articles about the GTR every month, I've got one so why would I need to read about how great it is all the time?

Magazines are what they are, lightly entertaining but quite obviously biased towards the highest bidder. As for Chris Harris, what a (911) bore the man is.

Evo featured the 2011 GT-R in LAST year's ECOTY.

Unfortunately it did rather poorly against the competition (which I can't even remember, but included the Ferrari 458).

ECOTY is aimed very purely at their "thrill of driving" tagline. The fastest car seldom wins and track driving is not the main criteria either.

Seeing as the 2012 didn't feature in this year's test, it is possible it will be in next year's ECOTY.

Other mags' end of year tests seem to have rather random participants to say the least. More what's available than what were the most important cars of the year.

Each to their own but personally, I think Chris Harris is a great writer/presenter and has his own unique style. He obviously appreciates great cars too - you can't knock him for loving his 911's. He's always had nothing but praise for the GT-R as well.

Each to their own
Absolutely, what a dull world it would be if we all liked the same thing. My main gripe with Chris Harris is the fact he cannot write any article without comparing the car he's reviewing with a 911. It's almost as though it's in his contract to mention 911 in each article. Beyond that, not a bad writer really.
