Could someone tell me if it's true that Ceramic Turbos are very prone to shattering and in turn ruin the engine?, Would it be adviseable to change to steel Turbos?, The car in question is 12 years old and has ceramic turbo, so now concerned that they might shatter at any time.

Regards,

Vacoas.

Depends which turbos you are talking about.

The ones fitted to the R33 GTR are ok up to 1 bar. Anything over this for extended periods is going to see them in pieces.

What happend to your engine is a matter of luck really. The intake blades have to travel through all of the pipework and the intercooler before they get into the plenum chamber and then into the engine. It does happen.

The exhaust turbine tends to get blown straight out of the exhaust.

There are people about who run at 1.1 bar on overboost with a boost controller but this is only for short bursts.

If you keep the boost down then there is no reason why the turbines will fall to pieces.

hope this helps.
