max. boost is 700 mmHg. Now what is that in psi ?
Is this a standard max. for a non-chipped R33-GTR ?
If ECU is standard, how much more boost can I safely have ?

Anyone out there who can help ?

thanks.

700mmHg is 0.931 Bar or 13.52psi

Max on standard turbo's is normally 1 bar, although some poeple risk 1.1-1.2 on splash boost if they have a boost controller. Not recommedned to be above 1 full time as the cermaic blabes in the turbos do have tendancy to shatter if run 1.1 and above.

If you're looking to go above 1 Bar you're ging to have to upgrade your turbos, which will not be cheap - like any skyline tuning ;-)

cheers

thanks for that Iain.
Nice to know my ECU is standard.

Just occurred to me, if increasing boost is by a boost
controller, what does it mean when someone asks whether
your car has been chipped.

cheers.

Have not got a boost controller.
If it's blowing at .93 bar , how is this done ?
And how does the ECU control the boost, if it indeed does.

cheers.

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner . Have been away.
I assume I will be looking for 2 bleed valves.
If they are there, are these reliable?

Question still remains. What does it mean when your ECU
has been chipped.

James,

Don't just rely upon the stock boost gauge in the car as they aren't very accurate. Get it checked out using a proper gauge to satisfy yourself.

BTW, welcome.

Hello Peter,

If bleed valves aren't reliable then putting an accurate
boost gauge is not going to help.

the problem I have is sometimes for no apparent reason,
I cannot achieve full boost.
However, stopping the car, turn ignition off, take key out and
start engine again seems to cure it.

Anyone had this problem before? What's the cure?

James,

Your problem is your knock sensor is detecting detonation and is cutting boost and retarding your ignition timing. You do use super unleaded all the time don't you?

Have always fed my GTR with super unleaded.
If it's detonating, surely I should be able to hear
a bit of rattling noise from the engine. I'm not.
So ...

You won't hear it I can assure you. It's not the typical pinking you may have heard with other cars. Your description of the symptoms you are experiencing almost certainly describes the actions of the knock sensor. I know people may disagree with this but I have been told by those who know that the stock ecu will not properly fuel the car running at 1.0 bar. If you are running near to 1.0 bar then you may be running lean and getting some det. You need to take it to a Skyline tuner and get it checked out or you may regret it when you pop a piston or spark plug. All IMHO of course!

BTW, who said bleed valves aren't reliable, not me. What's that got to do with measuring the boost properly anyway?
