Joss.

The board seems to have slowed down a bit here (the speed not content ;) ) as well as the search/view new posts facilities. Is their a reason for this as I really miss these features.

We did chat sometime ago regarding the costs/input for this site so if this is the case then the ball should be got rolling here. I for one have no problem 'paying in' to this BB whatsoever as I do find it good fun.

Also another point is how much input it receives from you Joss. This I believe is 100%. Is this OK with you ?

At the end of the day this is for Skyline owners and its enthusiasts and I would hate to see this go to the wall so to speak.

Let us know your thoughts Joss.

glen.

ps. Could we also have a seperate area called 'Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah' for the Sheppey Massive  ;)

Oi!

I was going to disagree about the sheppey massive statement but you are right, why not have a little section for banter chat, its obviously popular as it is the longest thread;)

Seriously though, I wouldnt mind paying for the use of the site, I think its the way forward, that way only persons with a serious interest will sign on the site. Its what the Lancer people do and if the funds go towards anything that will make the site better or pay for the costs you incur as host then why not. The Midget wont be happy about paying but hej, he never is about spending a squid:p

Is this necessary Joss, would paying help go towards anything?

Paying is a good idea but it would also put of newbies. Unless they had a free 14 day trial (like the porn sites lol)

I agree

The site has become very slow in responding, and have said before that I doubt any of us would mind paying a members fee, due to the amount of information that we all contribute.

As for putting off newbies, why not give them a free trial, the only thing is you might get people who just keep joining, then re joining etc, I know i am suspicious but I know what some people are like:rolleyes:

Jeeees best shut up lecturing to the owner of the site now I think:D

Yeah, all joking apart I think if we all contributed a small fee then it would go along way (theres are so many members...)

Some more bandwidth would be really handy!

Bandwith

Rob

Does having not enough of this restrict the search facilities and speed of the site  . Only ask as I don't know what it does :) .

Joss,

If you want I will set up an account on one of the boxes at my work. Unlimited webspace, unlimited bandwidth (within reason, I would expect it to use the kind of space/bandwidth you've already mentioned).

It'll have to be a indefinite trial period though because I have to cover my proverbial rear end but you can rest assured I'll give you plenty of warning if circumstances change and I have to ask you to move it off of the account. I certainly wont delete anything before you've had a chance to move it anywhere.

I was thinking you could use this space purely for the messageboard since I would imagine it is that which generates the most traffic/uses the most webspace. You could keep the rest of the site (which seems to remain static) with your existing hosts.

If you want to set up a subdomain (eg. forums.gtr.co.uk) Ill give you an IP address to point it to, and user/pass to log in and upload content.

Machine has Apache, PHP, etc all on.

Let me know what you think.

T9OKYO-More bandwidth, faster responses, quicker downloading of padges. I think Durzels offer sounds pretty damn good though!

This is getting a bit like 'Points of View'
"Well done the BBC - another winner!"

- a subscription fee would get my vote. Unfortunately some people would feel that makes it a bit exclusive and might object (i.e. leave).

Perhaps charging for people who want to post on the 'for sale' or 'wanted' areas might be easier?

Or set up 2 lervels of membership where only subscribed members can initiate a discussion?

To be honest sounds like Durzels idea seems the logical step but if not then I think just a donation thing would suffice with maybe donators being listed in a thanks page and thats it, I know I wouldnt want any special treatment coz Id helped.

I think we should just leave it to Joss to decide the way forward.
He has brought us this far and done a bloody good job. He will have his own ideas, probably better thought out than ours, and if he needs to canvas our opinion then he will.

As for only allowing subscribers to start threads the thread highjacking would only be worse than it is now.

I think Joss is extremely busy with work at the moment hence the lack of response to this issue but I am sure he will sort it out.

Just my 2p worth

Been there done that...

We had all this a while back on the 200SX board. We were sharing with the 300ZX guys, but we grew too big and had to move, which we did to Titan Internet. We got the BSD200 package which gives us 2GB of bandwidth per month, plus hosting, PHP, MySQL, etc, for £200 per year.

You can see the performance of our site at 200SX BB. Because we had to start paying for the hosting as well as the extra bandwidth we used (we shift in excess of 20GB a month, with over 10,000 visitors a *week*) we started a membership scheme, which for £15 means you got discounts, preferential treatment at events, some sticky things to fit to the car, etc.

We made the BB open to all, as it's only by attracting new members that a club stays alive.

Just some useful info from some guys who were exactly where you were only a few months ago.

Cheers
