Hi
I have removed the cam belt cover marking nuts on the sensor,I cleaned it and replaced sensor minus the cam cover,so you can see the cam pulleys. The cars run ok for a day,but cut out and I can't get it started.I am a bit of a novice is there anything I can do to get the car started,to get it to a specialist garage, most mechanics in sheffield don;t want to know.I know it is something to do with the timing.Help would be appreciated.
Thanks

strange have you checked about the car and made sure its all ok? If it were running fine for a day then it should have been fine on the next day :/

when I replaced the cambelt on mine recently the CAS position I had previously didn't do any good at all after the cambelt was fitted (I marked it against the cam cover before removal) - not sure why :/ I had to adjust the ignition timing myself back to 15degrees (gtst ..20degrees with the gtr's) using a timing gun.

can you give any more symptoms - is it simply dead completely (no dash lights or owt) ...maybe the battery is toast or something?

Hi
All dash lights are working. The battery is fine.I did adjust the cas position by hand, not having a timing light. The car started ,then started running rough and then it just cuts out.Im wondering if in any way I could of moved the adjustable pulley.
Ps If so is it going to cost to put it right.
cheers

when you replace the cas without the cam cover you need to put spacers between the cas and the mounting points otherwise the shaft snaps. best have a good look at it again to see if any damage, if not get the cover back on and see if its ok again.

Dazza dont listen to Mava nobody likes him, he's always drunk, snipes people with firearms from his front room window and interrupts domino rallies too :p He smelt of 80% liquor yday morning at 10am when I popped by and he was spray painting his car too in this anebriated state - bloody wino.

(sorry Dave had to chuck it in - you've obviously got a day off and I'm stuck in work hehehe!)

hehehehe only joshin - your ignition is probably really really knocked out like less that 6 degrees or something. you say your car sounded really rough - my car sounded like it had a bucket o bolts under the engine when I set my ignition to as low as the CAS would go (It was fully clockwise if I recall correctly).

When I turned the CAS the other way (fully anti clockwise) the ignition timing was very high and the car idled really high too like 1800rpms. i was able to see the values on my power fc hand commander as a kind of secondary backup from the timing gun.

get the timing gun and set it to 20degrees (gtr). you may have to fiddle a little bit as the ignition signal from the loop on the ignitor gives a delayed signal apparently but definitely fix it all with the cam cover on like dave-clever-clogs-mava suggests :)

ps - he doesn't snipe people from his front room window...

...the bathroom window is a far better vantage point he told me! :D

Hi
when i checked no damage to shaft but four nuts on adjustable cam pully have rubbed back of CAS slightly
Could this have moved the pully because cant get it to run long enough to use the timing gun
I have fitted the gasket from the cam cover which has metal spaces in it is that ok or does it still need cam cover on?

ps.btw i do all my work on the car drunkcant u tell :D

I doubt that would have done any major damage to the cas as its the shaft that kinda does the figuring out bit for the car really but that said they are quite sensitive and need to be handled carefully. like you said if its just rubbed slightly then it should be ok.
Just fit the cam cover and sort it that way mate - get round to getting the car working before trying to show off some spinning cams ...if you wanna do that get a clear cam cover like Mava did an show em off in style :)

[email protected] head is still killing so had time off work today! was going to crack on with car but couldnt be bothered!

anyway, if the cas is still ok i.e no twisted/broken shaft then it does sound like ant says about the timing. should be ok with using just the gasket just dont crush the spacers in it as you will need them for your clear cam cover.
have you checked the conection on the cas? sometimes the plug works lose.
if the bolts have been hitting the cas it could have moved it round slightly them bolts would be doing one hell of a speed if you think about it. do what ant says and move it about, i would move touch forward before trying to start again.
