Hi everyone,

Just a quick one to say hello to everybody, I'm currently looking into the near future of purchasing a GTR just wondering if there is anything I need to look out for and what things I will need to be made aware, I'm looking at the lowest end of the market of the cars at he moment due to finances, I am currently running a astra vxro which I love to drive but want something a little more now,

Good luck Rob, but I'd say a GT-R is a lot more than "a little more", it's a big step up in power :)

If I was you and looking at the 09 plates I'd try to get an unmolested car and take it to Litchfield's for a stage 1, and buy their warranty at the same time.

Tyres and brakes are rip off expensive so I'd be looking to find a car with decent discs and tyres. (tyres 1.5k / brakes 3k, approx after market prices).

Bell housing, gear box, steering lock, can be easily searched on this forum, or see Deankenny's thread, warranty is essential with these cars IMO. :)

I dont mean to be rude, but please look at the servicing and maintenance costs of these cars. They are by no means cheap! GTRs require a lot of maintenance and parts are not cheap.

If that does not put you off your search, then the forum is great place to start your search. A lot of what you are asking has been discussed, many times.... just search, the are hours worth of reading on here :)

Personally, I disagree that a warranty is essential, I have gone for aftermarket parts on every occasion, except for my headlight change (which needed to be done a second time).

Thanks for all your replies, yes I am aware of the maintenance ect however I work at home and don't have to commute all the time, I know it will be a big step from the Astra but that's what I'm after my Astra is at the point of any more mods and it will become unreliable and I don't want that to be honest. Do the older ones still need service every six months?? This has confused me a little as the newer ones are 12 months I know they are slightly different but not sure by what or how much different :p

The running costs on the R35 are more than cars costing over £100k in many cases.

Even with occassional use I'd expect to spend £100 per week easy.
Plus insurance, plus buying the car, plus fuel.

Plus it'll be out of warranty...

Not trying to put you off, but buying one is not the most expensive part.
Just trying to be realistic.

The servicing can be extended to 1 year, but I prefer to service mine every 6 months. Looks good for resale and hopefully any problems are picked up before they break or cause a major failure.

Where are you based?

Trev, is right, especially if you are looking at the bottom end, i was looking a little above bottom end at the 40k mark 2010 model. As people know on here i am utter useless when it comes to such a high end car. So in the end i went to a dealer for piece of mind, checked bell housing as per suggestions, it was a little rattly, but i bargained using this as its not a big problem at all :)

Tyres i shot myself with as i checked them, but the inside edge were alot balder than the rest of the tyre, but again i have been compensated by the dealer for this somewhat.

Apart from that its an absolute straight car with full service history, took her for a test drive and all was splendid and superb, even drove it home over 250 miles without a hitch. Fantastic.

3-4 days later, i parked the car and went into a shop, jumped back in car and the car failed a transmission check and chucked fault at me. I thank the lord above me that i had a warranty with the car, because as we speak a new box is being put in the car with Middlehurst. To be fair to the dealer etc or myself, there was no way of knowing this was going to happen, i dont think anything i could've checked (or the dealer) would allow us to know this was going to happen, so due to this i will ALWAYS have a warranty on this car for piece of mind.

Especially looking bottom end like you say, im guessing going to have alot more miles than my car, its worth just asking the seller has anything been done to the gearbox ie, circlips, piston stoppers etcetc, as cars with these done i believe do not encounter the common issue i had.

As for running the car, i have been spending £40-£60 a day in fuel, for the short time i had it on road, but dont forget i just got it, so been driving it out of excitement this might drop, ive had a new service in or around £800, and 4 new tyres which were £1200. I am aware of all the running costs of the vehicle, and its something you need to prepare for, because if you dont it will hit quite hard.

Ahh fair enough if you don't mine me asking what sort of payments are you guys looking at on your cars around the 40k mark I've been looking at 35 to 40k mark for one mainly around 09 to 10 reg so night quite bottom end but near enough to be honest, how much would I be looking at for purchasing a years warranty on the car ect?? At the moment I'm really gauging and looking into it not 100 percent but these forums are great for me as I can learn what you guys are paying out not what the dealer thinks I wanna hear about running one :p only other car I would consider is an m3 but this being gtr forum I'm not gunna be surprised if everyone says gtr is the better option but I'm mainly thinking about maintenance, as I bought my VXR what I would call blind to running when I was just turning 19 so was clueless but I've learnt from that experience now :)

What kind of deposit do you have?

If you have £10k and are borrowing £30k over three years (the car will then be 6 years old for a MY10) you'll be looking around £950 per month. Roughly.
Plus running costs.

An aftermarket warranty and inspection is going to be around £1000+ on top.

Then you have fuel, servicing, tyres and brakes and good old insurance.



I bought my MY10 exactly like that. £10k down and £30k on the book.
But looking at the car and what it was costing killed the fun for me.
When I bought the MY11 I refused to do it unless I could do it with no finanace as it made me feel much better.

I hated looking at a car, sitting there bleeding cash.

Yeah I have a solid 10k deposit at the moment but I'm realistically not looking til early next year, but thanks that helps me out big time as I can get a rough idea on what my overheads will be and if it's not feasible this year I will just continue to save and search for the car took me nearly a year before I found the VXR I wanted at the right price

I'm not super rich or anything but i wouldnt have got a GTR unles i could pay for it day one without finance. The running costs are so high that loan payments on top would have broken me.

I bought a nice 09 car but even then I have spent over £4000 in the first two months, that included:

New front discs and pads ready for a trackday
Litchfield bell housing (done now so havent got to really worry)
Litchfield warranty
One Service.

Gives you an idea, plus insurance and fuel!

No problem.

Realistically if you are borrowing around that amount you need to be able to put aside £2,000 per month for everything. Nearly half on finance and the other half on running the thing, allowing for a safety margin.

They are expensive cars to keep unfortunately.

Depreciation is very low for a car of it's type, but the running costs offset this saving.

As said above ^^^ you can easily kiss goodbuy to £4,000 if you don't get one ready to go with plenty of life in the tyres/brakes. :(
This is why the bottom end of the market is the wrong place to look generally.

Quick update for you all still not he search and working finance out for myself, I have also started to consider a m3 e90 however I feel this just won't give the same fun but running it is cheaper than the GTR I wouldn't really be using the GTR everyday as I work at home however I do average around 8k miles a year I'm just struggling to see how the car would cost me around 2k including everything per month to be fair I probably wouldn't bother with a aftermarket warranty but just keep it clean and enjoy it.
