Just seen the spec on the new Lexus LFA and got a little worries for the viablility of the GT-R:-

LFA GT-R

202mph top speed 193mph top speed
62mph in 3.7 seconds, 62mph in 3.5 seconds
4.8-litre V10 3.8 Twin Turbo V6
552bhp 473bhp
354 lb ft of torque. 434 lb ft of torque
1480kg 1750kg
373bhp per tonne. 270bhp per tonne

The LFA seems a serious piece of kit and something that really takes the fight to Nissan...........Until you see the price:- £336,000?!?!?! Ok, its carbon fibre but not too much lighter for it, but for that kinda money for a "Toyota" id expect it to come with a flux capacitor

Why are Toyota avoiding building a GT-R rival, and other than the Russians and Arabs whose gonna buy one (ah:chuckle::chuckle::eek:)

It's not really great value even when compared to more expensive stuff. F458 - £170k(ish), MP4-12C - £125-175k. Both have more power, less weight and dual clutch and aren't associated with Alan Partridge.

Is it going to be a racing car, but they need to build a certain number for road use?

Like the Merc CLK GTR
Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ilmor Engineering provided enhancements to the engine, increasing displacement from 5.9 liters to 6.8. This increase in displacement coupled with the removal of a racing air restrictor allowed for 720 bhp (537 kW) and torque to 572 lb·ft (776 N·m). Mercedes-AMG claimed a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h).
The Guinness Book of World Records recorded the CLK GTR as the most expensive production car ever built at the time, with a price of $1,547,620(USD).
That's not alot of bang for buck ...

Don't think it is a Homologation special, if we look at the formulas it can compete in,

GT-1? No need for homologation specials just look at the r-35 GT-R V8?
Super Gt? They are running a version next season but is largely a run what you brung championship
VLN? Club racing championship, which clubby would run a 1/4 million pound car?
F1? (Probably quicker than Toyota's current car but You could buy one of this seasons Force Indias for a lot less;)

hmm?

Yeah but lets get real here guys, sorry to play devils advocate but the Lexus actually looks and sounds like a bonified supercar, and the GT-R, well, its a GT-R.

There is a difference between a Supercar and a Supercar Slayer, the latter is called that because it aint really a supercar...

Although that is an awful lot of money!

But the Lexus is ... well ... a Toyota. They have quite a supercar heritage don't they? I thought not.

It is gargantuanly over-priced and I reckon that initially only "brave" people with more money than they know what to do with will buy one.

Everyone else in the commonly accepted supercar world will point and laugh at the Japanese attempt to penetrate the marque ...

Doubtless they'll eventually be accepted as they do seem to do a pretty good job at things that others have done for umpteen years but in a fraction of the time and ultimately better. Perhaps a good shake up is needed to rock the establishment.

I look forward to they day the Japanese take on the Luxo Barges like Rollers, MayBachs etc. That'll be interesting.

Maybe not supercar heritage but they have got a huge racing background with rallying, Champ Car, Le Mans, IRL, NASCAR and F1 - thats got to count for something right?
