A NEW LOW

I agree with Scott,thats why I don`t post anymore.

Its called the fear of "everything you say gets the piss taken out of it syndrome"

On this Forum my interest has died.I quit.

Just thought Id add somthing here!

The technical part side of the site will go down as the database of questions and answers grows and people simply search and find the solutions they need, which belive it or not is a good thing, Ive been on boards where the same old questions are asked day in day out in the end this was semi resolved with a detailed FAQ.

As most conivable areas of skyline ownership are covered in thier respective areas Im suprised by some of the comments about the general chit chat area not being skyline enough and consisiting of too much banter I always thought thats why they existed on most boards

Re Elitism that usually gets us GTS owners worried but I do have to agree there has been a large increase in none skyline owners on the board. (really was aimng that at the my car is better than your car crew not you mycroft)

Seems there is never going to be a happy medium!

Though in answer to Andy I dont think there is a heavy policing of the site, what I do wonder though is what are the plans for the future - we havent had any changes for a while and all of the old limits inforced to lower the bandwidth havent been removed so I always feel paraniod putting up pictures etc....

I have noticed that these forums have been going downhill for quite a while, although I have not expressed my opinion.

I would have to agree with Jon on this one. The General Forum is a main talking place on the whole of the GTR forums. Many people post questions on here which should go elsewhere. People do this believing that they will get a far quicker response to their questions. These topics should be posted on the correct part of the forums and if not should be moved as soon as possible.

Just remember that Cem cannot be moderating the forums 24/7. Without Guy and Glen moderating the forums, I believe things can only get worse.

#Re Elitism that usually gets us GTS owners worried but I do have to agree there has been a large increase in none skyline owners on the board. #

I have to say that on most sites most of us 'others' are usually treated badly and are subject to abuse, please see that the fact that people come here, read the stuff, get a feel for the site, like what they find, join and add to the knowledge base as a great tribute to the site and its running, I would be proud of that fact and take the loss of 'intimacy' as moving on.

Without sensitive moderating the site could have become just another rubber room for the un-funny. The way Nitro was handled was exemplary and because the manner of the moderating was fair, he changed his tone, that is the sign of a grown up forum.

I don't like the term 'elitist' but this forum is fast becoming the best on the net, regardless of make, that isn't elitism that is just good old quality. Rare.

As a newcomer to this site (last few weeks), and a non-Skyline owner, I have only one thing to say, and it aint biased in any direction;

"As an enthusiast for powerfull road cars, I have yet to come across a site (including RS4.org) that has had as much proven technical information as freely available as this.

Your "group" technical knowledge of not just Skylines, but anything with a turbo(s) stuck on it is second to none.

Most importantly to me, this information has been given to me in the form of advice, real time, from all you guys that have contributed to my posts. Nobody has called me a silly twat for spending a fortune on spending a small fortune on modifying an already overpriced vehicle, and the general feeling I have received is one of "no problem mate, anything we can do to help you develop your car" - :)

I have found this refreshing to say the least, compared to a lot of other websites, including the one specialising in my own car! Getting responses like "its been posted before" when it hasnt, or no responses at all, purely because nobody understands the question, is not the sign of a good site. You guys dont suffer that.

Please, at least from my point of view, do not consider your site to be going down hill. It seems to me gtr.co.uk is on the roller coaster ride of success.

Some people dont like change, some people think its necessary. Its up to you guys to decide what you need.

You have a cracking site here, and even if you just stick to talking/posting between GTR owners only, please still let the rest of us in. I for one will still read and learn."

10/10 guys - keep it going , please.........

Andy

Wow .. some hot under the collar posts going on here... As a new Skyline owner (well, paid for a few weeks ago - but still never driven one  ) I'd be sad to see the forums over or for that matter under moderated... Its a very fine line to tread.

I'll agree (for what my tiny opinion is worth :p ) in saying that anything technical that has a sub-forum should be in that sub-forum...

This site is superb, has excellent content and really did kind of clinch the deal in me deciding I wanted a Skyline ... But some of the b1tching thats in this thread - unreal - its getting hard to move around for all the handbags in here! :(

For a newbie like me it seems pretty scary that things get so personal on a forum when at source we all hopefully have the same basic interest ... I just love the Skyline and want to be involved in a "community" that feels the same way. Hopefully it won't all turn to p00...

Peace out dudes... :smokin:

I went with the Mods. Its always good to have someone around who can sort out any issues with the site :)

These guys here seem to keep a nice balance between Modding and just being another member of the forums, well done. Been to a few other sites where things are getting totally out of hand in terms of both members and Mods who can't help reminding you of their "power" every five minutes. Both bad members and bad mods can contribute to bringing a site down.

That said, this site has good Mods and is also lucky enough to have such a large proportion of great members.

I have to say though, not everyone who wants a Skyline can have one the instant they come to these forums!!! I've learnt a lot here from you guys, the only reason I don't have one now - I didn't want to be in a position where I have my dream car but can't drive it because it went wrong (as is my luck) and don't have the money to put it right.

So I'm trying to be smart, wait a year or so and get one when I can better afford it. I can almost feel that time already :)

It is the General Chit Chat forum that is bringing these changes about, a slight watering down of things Skyline and the odd rant, but I feel that this is what this area is for. Hope no one minded my Voodoo "Member" post. Others have occasionally posted the odd good joke that made me laugh and helped brighten my day and I just wanted to return the favor :)

Lastly I must say that a forum I have spent a lot of time on tried to get round a similar problem by ditching their equivilent of Gen Chit Chat. This move instantly removed some of the sites best members who felt they needed an area to chill out and not stay dead on topic. This put a huge strain on the Mods who now have to spend a lot of their time making sure no one talks about anything off topic. The bad feeling and loss of atmosphere REALLY bought that site down. -- Didn't totally solve the probs either though.

Sorry about the long post, I care about this site, love the cars and like spending quite a lot of time here :D

Happy Skylining.

Hey all,

At first I was a little upset to hear that a few people thought the site had gone down since we took over. I left the house a little disspirited. However, on reading the posts now, it does make a real nice change to hear that the vast majority of the people here are more than happy.

At the same time, I will respect that all is not as some would like and I will endeavour to resolve any issues that would otherwise lead to the discontinued use from some people. It really pains me to see friends argue. And Glen is absolutely right, Andy and I were out chatting the other night until 2.30am and I thoroughly enjoyed his company and for that reason, I will always respect his opinions.

Just so you all know, Guy has asked to resign as moderator of the board. I have asked him to reconsider and will wait for his answer next week. Suffice to say, I would be most disappointed if he were forced to make that decision as he has been most supportive of everything I've strived to achieve Skyline related of late.

Wow,

I go away on business for a few days and look whats here to greet me...:(

I am a newbie to this forum, but not to the love of skylines and fast cars in general. I came to this site via a search on the internet as I drew closer to buying one of my dream cars, as a good place to find information, and to get a feel for ownership.

All I wanted was a place to meet, talk to and learn from people of a common interest. The fact that they did or did not own a skyline didnt matter, I was naive enough to think that this would be a place where all were equal and the common interest made the bridge between personalities.

I have to admit that on occasion there seems to be more than a little "healthy discussion" and personalities DO get in the way, but on the whole it seems a nice place to hang out. I have been guilty of the odd bit of pi55 takin, for which I apologise to pegleg and the other legionnaires !! :D

On the other hand I feel that most peoples feelings could be accomodated....I have no idea what wold be involved and my apologies in advance to Joss et al...but wouldn't a lot of these gripes be settled with a poets corner, or anything goes room, where nuttiness and anarky could reign un-moderated (except for obvious racist/nasty/personal comments) ??

Believe me, I have no wish for the forum to go down now I've just found it, or be a place where the thought of serious car-chat is ridiculed ala aol:bikechat........

Dont forget people, you never realise how good something was until you loose it, and a compromise is better than nothing at all........:)

My 2p's worth..........and my preference is for the moderators to carry on with the good work.

James..............

Just an idea here, but since a lot of people seem to think the "General Chit Chat" section is getting a bit out of hand with banter and such, why not make an "Off Topic" section which people can use to chill out from Skyline talk?

Can't help but compare this situation to what happened in the SDU forums a while back. The General Discussion section ended up being locked for quite a bit in order to redirect topics and conversations back to Skylines... I hope that we don't come to this!

I for one are more than happy with what Cem, Guy and Glen have been doing. It would be very sad to see Guy take this the wrong way as I can't think of a better person to moderate this board.

Just my thoughts on this situation...:)

Wow!
What a thread, and I only turned my back for a minute.

I definitely put myself in the boring old f**t class, and while the membership of the board has grown and grown, there have become a lot of threads which seem a bit trivial.
However, I still read them all, have a laugh at the jokes, and especially enjoy the technical stuff ( Mycroft - can't you just get a GT-R so that you are no longer a.n.other :p ). To summarise, this is still a great site Cem.
Sometimes there is a bit of personality clash , but this is just a reflection of life, and sometimes that needs a 3rd party to say 'hey - chill'. So I voted for the moderators as I think they've done a good job so far without being intrusive.

Finally - I find myself agreeing with Dino again - Guys decision to resign is his to make but I really think that we will not find a better moderator due to his level-headedness and obvious passion for the Skyline.

I'm going to start the "Keep Guy' petition.

:D

When I...

got serious about buying a Skyline I did some serious research.
I found my car through Shin on this site. I have never looked back. I browse two forums - this one and SDU as they are the best out there. While I have access (I travel a lot) to the internet I will check these two forums whenever I can because I enjoy it.

I not quite sure but didn't they have an issue with SDU along these lines awhile back. They were going to make it a members only forum (with a fee) and people could browse but only members could post. There was so much negative feedback on this that it did not happen - but surely if you want to keep the quality of the forum this may be the only option as the member database must be getting huge by now and the complaints mentioned in this thread will only worsen. it is inevitable.

I would pay a small fee just for the wealth of information and the satisfaction I've received on this forum.

SDU is now back under control.

What happend with SDU was very similar to what is happening on this board, only SDU had a much larger users base than we have here, and the slide became uncontrolable. It was necessary to close the general forum as the content had lost all relevance to Skylines.

On the whole SDU is a better place now, with almost all content Skyline related in one way or another. The social aspect of the SDU boards still remains, but it has been moved to the regional forums where it is much more appropriate.

The cure for SDU was a strict set of guidlines, managed by a large number of moderators, who would agree actions by discussion where necessary.

Cem,
The deterioration of the quality of this site is not a new thing, it was well on the way before it passed to your hands, and I say this with no disrespect to Joss.

At the moment there are 880 Registered Members on these forums. For me and many other people the GTR forums are a god-send for any Nissan Skyline owner/fanatic.
I spend quite a lot of internet time just browsing these forums, which I find fun, just clicking the forum button on the left every so often to check for new posts.
Many other forums have moderators, so really I cannot see the problem which anyone may have. I don't think I have ever been to a forum before which has not had 1 single moderator on.
As the site traffic increases and more and more people register on these forums, there is obviously going to be more people on the forums. The moderation work for just 1 person (Cem) would be just too much to deal with. This is why it can only be good to have Guy and Glen moderate them.

I say keep the moderators;)

Best Regards,
-Elliot

I think the choices for the Mods could not have been much better :)

I hope they are not disheartened by this thread and both stay on to continue doing a good job. With so many members I think they are needed for the good of the site to stop things possibly getting too out of hand. After all, anyone can come along, with the good and bad that it can bring. Usually the good stay and the bad only stay a short while.

The site is still a fantastic place and has not so much deteriorated, as become a little diluted in General Chit Chat which used to be more dedicated to things Skyline/performance car related. So maybe an Off Topic Forum is not such a bad idea?? Or would it break things up too much having two similarish forums?

The important thing to remember in all this, is that we are lucky enough to be members of one of the best forums around and its the members who make it what it is - a great place to hang out and learn/talk about Skylines

I vote to keep the moderators. Including Guy!

To all those who have expressed the opinion that this forum has been going downhill lately, you are right, and I have pinpointed the exact date of the start of the decline.

28th January, 2002

Lets not lose sight of the fact that this is one of the most respected sites of its type. Shame we had to lose Mario.

Time for Draxx to Stick His Ore In!!

Personally, I like this site lots, I think that all the so called ELITISM has mainly gone from the forum, and that is not a bad thing. As Cem now owns and runs the site, I bow to him and his knowledge and I respect his decisions and the decisions of the people HE puts as moderators. People cannot have free right to say what they want 24 hours a day, it is not practical or desirable, for example how would folk on here react if some Nazi Facist started posting racial slurrs on here??

Without Moderators and an Interested and enthusiastic owner they would run riff. Wake up everyone, and have some respect for the guy that OWNS gtr.co.uk!!

Its a free resource as of yet, and maybe in the future it may not be, Then and only then will WE have any right to determine what Cem does with his property, and possibly some negative posters or Piss Takers or Non owners will leave or not pay the subs.

IS THIS Really Worth it?? No one but Cem can change anything, and Dirk if your not happy then dont post. BUT I will be upset if you leave as you are a very good and usefull member of our community.

I Believe that GTR.CO.UK can be a International base for all thing Skyline, but things take time, have a little faith in the owner guys, Cem has been doing this for a while!

If people have personal conflict, come on guys that aint worth it either wheather you own a GTS GTR or 2 grand to 200 grand we all got a Skyline and we should get on a bit better than this me thinks!

Just my 50ps worth, if anyone cares that is!!!:D

I remember years ago watching the Marquis of Blandford talking about this amazing car he owned. The car was the Nissan Skyline GT-R 32 and I wanted and NEEDED to know more about this car.

I used to tape top-gear every week and wait for this car to show up but there was nothing - then one show Clarkson did a ten minute skit on the GTR33 in Japan, then another on the best drivers car in the world (he couldn't decide between the R33 and the Ferrari 355)

And for a long long time this was all I knew, aside from a couple of articles in specialist magazines, 15 minutes of naff video footage and a gnawing desire to just KNOW more about the Skyline never mind own one.

Then I bought a PC and got onto this internet thingy - ran a search and found gtr.co.uk when it was just a couple of pictures and a link to Middlehurst. Been here ever since.

Without gtr.co.uk I would not only be clueless about the Skyline, I would certainly not be the proud owner of one.

Gone downhill?? - i think not.

Peace,

Glen (the other one).

44 votes 'Yes' as against 6 votes 'No' so far............thanks for the 'votes' of confidence and also all the kind messages of support (both on and off the board).

It is also clear from the thread above that the reason people visit this site is to learn and talk about Skylines (I guess that should be obvious), not to visit an internet chatroom.

We now have nearly 1000 members and many more visitors. People read and visit this site from all round the world. They are visiting to discuss Skylines and learn about the legend from those of us lucky and proud enough to own them.

The reference to Skylinesdownunder is a very valid one. I have been a member there for a long time too and they went through the same upheavals we are going through. Their site became a piss-taking, joke posting forum and people lost interest. As JasonO said they dealt with that by ensuring that the main forums were for discussing Skylines and leaving an area elsewhere for chit-chat and jokes.

It saddens me greatly when I am told by some of our oldest members who have owned GTRs for many years that they will not post on the site, because they know there will be piss-taking of their posts and the threads will degenerate and go off at tangeants.

I am sure that this can be addressed when Cem launches the new-look site shortly.

This site will grow, evolve and move forwards. Sadly some changes will always be resisted by some people, but as was said a long time ago 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few'.

Big speech over......!

Guy
