as T88s are ancient monstrous things, what single turbo is the modern alternative? I haven't a clue about single turbos on the Rb26 but I need to advise an acquaintance...

Depends on what level of response/power is needed. What about Garrett GT4088R (upto 700bhp), GT4094R (750bhp) or GT4294R (800bhp+)

HKS Designed Garrett Ball Bearing Series (T51R, T04Z)
Arnt they GT40s and GT42s with fancy looking housings anyhow? Wheel sizings for the two size T51Rs ive seen have been identical to the two common size GT42 ones...

Precision, Innovative, Turbonetics, etc etc all have turbos that will give similar or more power than a Trust T88 with a far lower boost threshold.

The DJ Craig Supra (2nd at Japshow Finale) used to run a T88 and now runs a "budget" XS Power GT45 and that far outperforms the T88 on spoolup and overall power too.

here's my *slight* dilemna..hehe

-the guy sold me a mint RB26 head, ported, uprated valve springs, all polished up, for $450USD when I was in need. He's a nice guy.
-his black BNCR33 is up for building once my car clears the bay at the tuners.
-like most Koreans (with very limited JDM tuning knowledge), he's going for what he knows to be "the ultimate", which means a T88 in a Skyline.
-there's better out there than that old truck turbo, but then...do I want his car to outshine mine (GT2860-5's)??

Think so.
Do Garrett not sell the turbos to HKS (read jap companies) and then they just stick their own badge on them, or maybe change a wheel or something very slightly?

HKS further the Garrett development on the turbos, THEN they re-badge them.

Any idea what they actually do to them?
Or is an jap tuning secret that allows them to double the price :chuckle:
(not a dig at the companies as i know a lot is spent on R&D)

I, like you, would love to see a back to back comparison of HKS and the Garrett counter part. Even if HKS would supply compressor maps, you could draw some kind of conclusion. But alas, I can't see this happening.

T04Z is identical wheels to the earlier T04R - all the improvement comes from ball bearings and HKS designed turbine and compressor housings. HKS have just maximised the flow into and out of hot and cold sides.

SteveN I haven't seen any Garrett specs that match the T51R exactly but the T04R and Z turbine are P trim T04 from the sizes.

Compressor Turbine
T04R 63trim 66.7 mm 84.0 mm 76 trim 74.2 mm 64.7 mm
T51R Kai 56trim 70.3 mm 94.0 mm 70 trim 82.0 mm 71.4 mm
T51R SPL 56trim 76.5 mm 102.2 mm 70 trim 82.0 mm 71.4 mm

The only semi-reasonable explanation for why HKS are supposed to be better than Garrett's own I've ever heard is that Garrett sell their newest developments to HKS a year or so in advance of releasing them under their own name. Even this seems pretty far fetched to me.

The idea that HKS have more competent CFD / turbine / housing modelling specialists and are able to design 'better' housings than Garrett seems ridiculous to me. They are a good tuning company, not a specialist turbine / turbo engineering company.

I reached the same conclusion myself. I'm pretty much sold on the GT2860's as a replacement for my std tubbies. Had looked at GT-SS's and 2530's but the markup seems pretty horrific. Lets face it, Garrett are THE turbo manufacturers with years of R&D and experience in the turbo field. They wont sell crap.
