You can change the wires inside the tank, it is a bit of work but by no means impossible...
First you need to find a wire that can be in constant contact with fuel, then you need to open up the connectors so that you can solder in the new wire onto the existing ones. I have done this so have larger wires all the way from my battery to the fuel pump, no pictures though I am afraid :/

The modern switches are better, and handy if you do not stall after a crash and spring a leak from the return line, or get a partial leak feed side.
