Evening All,

I just thought I would post the honest review and initial impressions of the import of my R34 GTR the process, the car itself and I’ll try and keep it updated with its progress:

Let me start of by saying this has been my dream car since I was kid playing gran turismo on the PS2. Fast forward quite a few years and I was on the hunt for an R34 GTR, I initially started about a year and a half ago speaking to HJA about prices and became quite interested in a non v spec model they had, however, insurance being 21 caused numerous issues and before I managed to find an insurance quote that was suitable the car had sold. Prices then started to dramatically increase. I thought I would then wait till brexit and when the yen had evened out with the pound I could import one!! (stupid move) I thought I was priced out of a move for the car I had been dreaming about for years.

6 Months later, I saw one of my friends shared an import company on Facebook (Drift Street Imports) and some of the cars they had for sale. I thought why not get in touch, this was I think 27th December at about 1 in the morning. To my surprise I got a response a few minutes later completely unexpected providing me with details about the types of car that had gone through auctions recently and what I could expect with rough on the road prices. I was amazed, Christmas had come early sort of, a dream I thought was gone had officially been reignited. Over the next few days I was on the phone just to get some more information.

I wasted no time, as soon as I had a weekend free I arranged to meet and headed down to Drift Street Imports based in Surrey (a few hours drive at worst from me). I headed down and was greeted by Shaan who I had seen in a few of the MonkyLondon youtube videos. We had a great chat he showed me via the Japanese auction sites the types of cars that had gone through, grades and price and told me realistic expectation's for my budget.

Some of you may have seen the MNP R34 GTR that had a bit of a spin on the Nürburgring, well that was in for some work in the garage next door. If you have any seen any of the MonkyLondon Videos you will know this place as the farm.

I had never seen a real R34 GTR and the condition was incredible. This was one of his customer's cars in for work at one of the companies next door at Carson Performance (Simon/Scouse). It looked amazing, I was sold there and then, had a long chat with Simon just to gauge the scale of potential work and prices and learnt a variety of things about the car that I would have otherwise overlooked.

Leave it a week, I was making multiple calls throughout the week in my lunch breaks trying to get insurance quotes to back up my thoughts that the car needed to be as stock as possible (not something that's too common in the auctions and dealers in Japan).

I headed up again the following weekend, we had another long chat, just to probably aid my nerves that I wasn't going to be disappointed and to confirm what I was after and what I should expect.

I was sold, I put a deposit down that day with Shaan and the team for the search process to begin, for anyone new to this and reading my post this is normal and lets them know that you are a serious buyer. I went home that day smiling from ear to ear.

For the week or so, I was in touch with Shaan day in day out at any time of the day, not sure if this man sleeps but he was always there to help me and advise me. In under two weeks! I had found the car, the auction was commencing in a few hours, the team went out there gave me a full inspection in fine detail and I received the professional opinion to go for the car or not. It was a grade 4b, not without it's small faults, a few dinks, but had a variety of Nismo bits (front and rear bumpers, spats, skirts, Nismo LED's etc) and most importantly relatively few performance mods! Something I had to have due to insurance.

Two hours later, I got a message to say 'We Had Won!' I woke up at about 4am and couldn't sleep for the next 24 hours, I was just researching everything, constantly staring at the auction photos just to confirm that it was real! A few weeks later it was at the port ready to be shipped, Shaan sent me numerous photos of the car inside, underneath, outside, interior, engine bay etc and that would be what I stare at again for the next few month's while she was in transit another thing which I could track (I wish I didn't know now, I spent every few hours tracking its progress).

Touch down, it arrived in the UK, Shaan and shipping handlers organised the import process through customs etc and transport down to Drift Street Imports showroom.

During the shipping time from Japan to the UK I had been in touch with a few garages and underseal specialists, but just by seeing the work on this R34 GTR, the other cars down there and the genuine helpful attitude and time Simon had given me to explain stuff I had called and arranged for a variety of bits of work to be completed on the car (full underseal, full major service including belts etc, speedo conversion from KMH to MPH and also the reverse light conversion to fog light.

I headed down to Surrey again a week after it had arrived just to see the car and have to say I was so pleased, it looked amazing and was everything I wanted. Had a long chat and walk over the car with both Shaan and Simon and was eager to see the day when she was ready to be picked up. One thing I noticed was the how badly the OEM wheels needed spacers something I added to the quite lengthy list I had given Simon. 20mm spacers on order!
Collection day (a week ago!), as expected I had to wake up early I couldn’t contain my excitement. I headed up and there she was all registered, clean, and ready to drive home. I was disappointed, it put a smile on my face something that my Fiesta ST (the daily) had done and still does to date. Cue multiple beeps, thumbs up, smiles and men nodding on the drive back (I was in the slow lane too…).

A week on and I have driven it just under 150km, always putting a smile on my face even with the Japanese headunit talking to me and telling me what I presume to do a u turn out of the Tokyo sea. The gearbox feels smooth, power delivery feels smooth and it just feels like a new car to drive even the seats are plump!

I have managed to make a few mistakes so far, the main one being taking my headlights back from cloudy to clear using toothpaste no sanding yet… We managed to drop the toothpaste down inbetween the intercooler and the front bumper/diffuser two hours spent getting that out was not what I wanted at about 8am Saturday morning.

All in all, I have made quite a few friends through the respective forums on Facebook who helped me numerous times, a great import company who I wouldn’t hesitate to use again and also a garage who have been nothing but helpful even a week on me asking questions about other areas of the car!
A few photos below for anyone interested and I’ll be updating this thread along with my Instagram in the coming months with the progress. (A new Headunit and touch up paint is first on the list as well as the Carbon Spoiler Leg Raisers!)

That's a great looking car!

How much was it to do the underseal on it if you don't mind revealing?

Thanks Jags, I have a feeling I was interested in your car a year or so ago but insurance wasn't happening back then - White R34 GTR?? If I'm mistaken my bad!

Full underseal, came to around the £1k mark and I cant fault it.

I think I remember you! Yes white R34, think that was about two years ago or something now:tard::thumbsup:

Yeh, it did sell, the first guy who came to view it took it straight away, can't remember his name now but he was a pilot based out of Heathrow. He was going to use it as his daily driver he told me!

I got myself an Evo after that

Yeh, it did sell, the first guy who came to view it took it straight away, can't remember his name now but he was a pilot based out of Heathrow. He was going to use it as his daily driver he told me!

Ah sorry I thought I replied to this! Not suprised it looked so clean and looked after! Hope you're enjoying the evo buddy.

Hi mate nice write up and nice car,to buy your dream car at the age of 21 good on you
Out of curiosity how much is your insurance?
hi buddy, unfortunately turned 22 by the time it was all purchased so getting on a bit now haha. Insurance jumped from £780 to £1200 whilst I waited the few months for the shipping due to some of the government increases. The £1,200 covered all the mods, driving any other car fully comp and agreed value so well worth it! Hope that helps.

Few little updates:

Sorted out the MFD thanks to the guys who made the tutorials on the forum! Getting the glue and layers off this screen took way too long, but 2 hours well spent.

Headunit also installed, out with the Japanese headunit lady constantly talking to me telling me I?m in the sea.

Also gave the car a proper once over and detail! My first little detailing session on the car and really happy with the results.
Looks really good mate
White does look awesome and you don't see every little imperfection on the like I do mine.
