Simply because if they had used a 400bhp+ example of the Skyline GT-R breed, It'd probably embarrass allot of their much more modern machinery on the Top Gear Leader Board and no car manufacturer is going to be happy with coming in slower than a twenty five year old Neee-San!
We all know what the shortcomings of a bone stock R32 are and 28 years haven't done any good to its components so the result wasn't really unexpected. IMO much more interesting than having the Stig drive a builit-to-the-hilt time attack car or a thoroughly modernized example.
