HI i bought a skyline r33 gtr recently and it was running fine, then it started hesitating on and off and the rev's at idle speed would go down and run lumpy, i had a feeling it could be spark plugs or coil packs, so i bought new spark plugs and fitted them it seems to run alright for a bit then it started running lumpy again. Then just recently it started running really it started idling at 100 rpm THATS RIGHT 100!! but the car still didn't cut out so i drove it home and when i got home there was smoke coming from the engine bay it looked white but it was dark and it didn't smell like oil and the car now just cuts out when i try to start it and even with foot on gas it starts then dies as soon as i let my foot off but if i hold my foot on at a certain point it wants to die then it goes up then wants to die again then goes up! I;ve tried to be as descriptive as i can i hope someone has the patients to reply

Sounds like inlet manifold gasket air leak, spray around the gasket area with brake cleaner if there is a leak the idle speed will rise then fall.

Hi thank you for your replies, i am hoping it is a vacuum leak or hose popped off, but wherre the smoke/steam was coming from is at the back of the engine, the part closest to the windscreen which i cant see down the gap as its too close any idea's whats pipes or hoses lie in that part of the engine?

And also its erratic idle anyway it bounces from 1000 - 100 then back to 1000 then 100 then dies its hard to keep it ticking over without holding revs on buy the time i make it to my engine bay its cut out

Could be afms as for the steam yes the heater pipes run across the back, if its steam you have a leak, how long has it been steaming ? Have you noticed any water loss ?

As Above..the AFM`S create a lot of running problems when going Faulty...
I have changed the afm's for working ones off a working r33 gtr but the problem was still there, and as for the water loss i've not noticed any it only started to do it when it started idling at 100 i've not been able to run it since.

I've also just bought some replacement coils which i will try tomorrow when its light

Take the plugs out and look at them all.
If one is oily and wet it might be one of your coilpacks is shot.
If this is the problem swap that coilpack with the bad plug to the front of the engine.
Then try running the engine and put that plug in with a different coil pack. (to make sure the plug is ok).
With the engine running now unplug the front coilpack, (the one you suspect is faulty) and see if the engine tone changes when you unplug it. If it doesn't you have a faulty coilpack.

UPDATE .......
I've swapped the coils over with the new ones i bought it seems to start better it doesn't cut out straight away but it still cuts out and when i put my foot down nothing happens except the revs go down......??? but if press the accelerator on and off i can get it up to boost then the revs seem to increase fine, i don't think it would be drivable though

Just to let you guys know the problems sorted it turned out to be a few split hose's and some dodgy afm's Thanks for your help guys

always funny that afm's. just after i came back from vacation, after 4 weeks ur engine starts fine. fill op with petrol at the petrol station. and than doesnt fire up anymore , how ever when u disconnect the afm's its goes in limb mode,. and ur engine should be running normal. only ur rev limit is now 2k rpm as im not wrong.
