I'm looking into doing a similar set up. The way I see it is

#1 if one pump fails along with the pressure drop the The fuel is only entering the fuel rail from one side it then has to pass the return line to get to the other end of the rail and some will be lost to the return line

#2 if one pump fails the fuel will still be entering from both sides of the rail as Normal with just the pressure loss to deal with

as far as i can tell from most posts/threads

2x -6 to the rail and a -8 return will be fine.

If you wanted you could join the -6 lines into a y piece and go -8 both ways and open back up to 2x -6 at the rail. Up to you really
