Just wondering how everyone first became aware of skylines and what had generated interest in them. I have no doubt that nowadays the prominence of skylines in computer games (gran turismo, metropolis street racer, Project Gotham racer et al) certainly has led to awareness in the youth of today (god, how old do I sound?) , but how many people were aware of the brand years before, especially outside of Japan and Australia.
I think the first time I had some awareness was in an early japanese PS1 game which I think was never released in the US or europe called drift king. It was released in 1996 by a company called Genki who later went on to do the Tokyo highway battle games on the next generation of consoles. The most memorable thing about drift king was the FMV footage of some Japanese bloke absolutely belting this R33 around an empty circuit demonstrating phenomenal control. This was probably the first time I thought, Hmm, I NEED one of those cars, although 7 years later when I finally got a skyline it was an R34, and I have never tried drifting it! :p

It's too late now I realise to try to convince anyone I'm not a geek

I first became aware of the Skyline in the mid 90's, think it was just from reading car mags, first one I saw on the road was a black R32 GTR with a private plate that I followed in a friends car and then saw again a few hours later in a Brighton carpark.

I think the first I saw in real life was a gunmetal grey R32 GTR parked at the side of the road when I was visiting London a fair few years ago now, I would have walked straight past it, had I not recognised the GTR badge on the back. It had a presence I remember although it was a terribly tatty example.

Gran Turismo is most peoples first experience of the Skyline, certainly in my generation, this will be discussed in more detail in my coming book ;) Hopefully with some words from Kazunori Yamauchi...

Personally I saw a press photo in Autocar back in '89 when the BNR32 first came out :)

Book is coming on fine thank ya, still compiling information, very hard to get any in english, hoping for a pretty good breakthrough soon though... ;)

Hope all is well back in the homelands of Essex :)

My dad was an early adopter of Sky and I remember R32s racing in touring cars, but I didn't really get into them until the R33 was launched. After reading all the press etc I decided that one day "It will be mine". Gran Turismo just made me more determined. My girlfriend was appauled  when I bought my GTR and she was moved down my list of priorities by one spot - after my Skyline, Hifi and Frank Zappa albums. :D

Bathurst - The Great Race, Mount Panarama, Toohey's 1000, Three successful seasons. My elder brothers and step father talking about the cars potential! - That pretty much made it the car of choice. :D

Gran Turismo was the first time i ever heard about Skylines. Then i saw an R32 GTR on a Clarkson video, then a heavily tuned one (R32 GTR again) with Vicky Butler-Henderson behind the wheel on a car program absolutely destroying a Cerbera

In real life i've only seen a few. A boring R33 GTS completely stock, then saw Koolblue on the M25 in his blue R33 last year, then the most recent was a white R33 on the M40 coming past me.

Every single time i saw those GTRs i had butterflys in my stomach :D

I had seen skylines in the early nineties on tv but i wanted one after going to a Ford RS regional show in feltham about 5/6 years ago, I saw quite a few R33 GTR's there and wanted one after looking around them. Although i ended up buying an R32 GTR instead. :D :D

my first skyline memory

My Uncle who lives in Melbourne tapes the entire 1000km Bathurst race (3x 3hr tapes) every year for my Dad. We have every race since the early nineties.

The GTR's flat out over the mountian, truly awesome!

Plus I have a few articles in some old car magazines, The GTR was the car I aspired to, then I got one and it was everything and more. Don't get me wrong, I've had some great cars but the GTR is my favourite, its also the only one I feel intimidated by. After I bent my first 32 I was really kicking myself, but had to get another one, I just show it a little more respect.

My 1st Time was when "Driven" a Ch4 TopGear style program used our airfield.

They had a Porsche Carrera4, Jag XK8 and BB R34GTR all drag racing. We got to have a go at dinner time and, after my go in the others, Penny Mallory took me for a "quick Spin" in the GTR. Best Drive I've ever had!

Seeing those pics from driven reminds me that my car was once a press/publicity car. The next off the production line to the one there in fact. I only realised this after noticing that nearly all the R34 pics you see are of the T? GTR plate. A fact brought home to me when I took my car for a service at Middlehursts then noticed that they had a large poster of a bayside blue GTR going round a bend on a circuit. A quick glance of the number plate confirmed that this was my car. Bloody hell!, I thought, I wonder if Clarkson and all his mates had been thrashing the crap out off my pride and joy prior to my ownership. No wonder the driver seat has that "fat ****" distressed look.

Oh by the way, did anyone ever see the episode of Top Gear where they had the R32, R33 and the R34 and one of the presenters was talking about the price ranges etc. and import specialists. It was a fairly old episode.

Really! that wasn't too long ago then, and the appearance of that was pretty brief if I recall (desperately trying to deny a more than v.casual interest in said film). Also I do remember that volkswagan passat, it is but a distant memory now though

oh, don't get me going.....I won't stop
Briefly
It was summer 96.....had my Integrale for yonks, looking to change
Phone call from friend, (David Yu) - "fancy coming to Bruntingthorpe to do some filming with Clarkson?....I've got this crazy new car".....ur, yes OK
Said blue R32 GT-R rolled up at 07:30 outside my house.......Bl00dy hell that noise has made my nose bleed......oh yes please
Took everything out on M1 up to Brunters, interesting filming........Clarkson coins the phrase "Physically Ironic", have lunch, then power runs down the runway......me perched in back with camera.....resulting photo shows clock at 187mph eeeeeeek, with more but ran out of runway!......said picture seems to be on a few websites over the following few years.
Decision made......R32 GT-R it is.......take delivery May 97 of dark blue R32 GT-R (same colour as Davids - a coincidence)
Thats it really, kept til early 03 then sold to my friend Richard (wingnut on the forum.....doesn't post much)
Then bought Cem's BB R34 GT-R.......I see it everytime I log onto the forum, as Alex has used a picture in his Serious Performance banner Ad.
BTW the first Skyline meet I went to was organised by David Yu and Jos back in summer 97 I think, and there were about 10 cars at the Royal Standard Pub in Beaconsfield.
Right thats me done, anyone reading this that was at that meeting ???????
