im 19 Y/O driver 1 year NCB held licence for 2 years looking for a new car with a budget £3k+ but the insurance in a skyline is killer willing to go around the 2k even 2.5k mark on insurance if its a beauty ie a skyline but pref 1.5 area! Looking for a car with nice high acceleration with decent reliability will be travelling motorways quite a bit but willing to cut travel to save insurance and im a student so cant be lumbered with the odd £100+ part every month so this kind of leads me to the nissan/honda/jap car bandwagon etc for the high end speed great reliability and relative enexpensiveness to obtain.

been looking at the Honda CRX/Skyline GTS/S14 but do like fiat stilo/punto bmw 3 series compact but the reliability is the question. To me the CRX looks fun its a convertible with a honda engine good speed 160BHP but not extreme and can be picked up for 3 grand and the insurance isnt as killer as a skyline GTS. Any advice?

Don't even think about a skyline, I don't know of any insurance companies that will insure anyone under 25 on a skyline, unless they have previously owned one.

I would go like this.

1st, go for the CRX. Learn the drive a fast car and it will also teach you to shift and the basic of heel/toe, all the other technique. CRX is a nice car to drive, but it is hard to really master because of the close ratio gearbox, short wheel base, and relatively light.

2nd, move on to a S13/S14. You will then realize that the line you will take (and the way it is driven) is very different from a FF. FR have different braking zone and different point where you accel, so this will give you a good introduction. Also will let you know about turbo boost/lag, and over steer.

3rd, move onto a Skyline. Basically a heavy FR with 4WD ability, and load faster then the previous 2 mentioned.

It takes alot of time to learn what to do in a car...I still don't think I am good enough. But jumping straight into a skyline is not the best of idea. Also, parts for CRX are very cheap. :)

very wise words, the lad that owned my gtr before me was 21, basically he admitted he got himself in at the deep end to quick, never took it over 5000rpm, & realised they cost a bomb to maintain, it would be interesting to see wish rought people took before buying a skyline, heres mine

mk1 fiesta supersports 1.3
mk1 xr2
mk3 xr3i
r5 gt turbo
mk2 golf 16v
mk2 RS2000
e30 325i

the list is endless but you get the idea, im not on about what youv driven in your life time but were the heart of your skills came from

I started with a MG Zr 160 that got stolen by a rather sneaky "tuner"
Been driving a CL600 for the few months till i just bought my self a nice WRX next will be my skyline. but i gotta wait a few months for that :)

I can tell you going from a shite 1.8L rover to the CL600 with monster torque was a rather interesting experiance, you really gotta wake up more when yer in a RWD car, or you can get in to a big can of worms reallllyy fast.

In the end no matter what car you drive you gotta respect it and use it right, you can kill your self in a 1.3 and in a 2.6!

You must live in a nice area to get a 2k quote on a skyline :/

I'm 19 with 2 years NCB and im still paying nearly that fully comp on a 1.1 106 lol. Bastards they are. And then people wonder why people drive around without insurance?

I'm sure the fine is slightly cheaper than £1500 :/
