Just remember that there is no such thing as a cheap GT-R. In my experience, having owned many fast cars (apart from Italian exotica) there is nothing else that will empty your wallet faster than a GT-R.

A GT-S is IMHO much better value. Furthermore I'm guessing that there are far fewer Skyline specialists in Canada, so the GT-S being easier to work upon will be a boon and lead to a more reliable car. Working at a bodyshop will help with cosmetics, but you'll still need an RB specialist at some point and I doubt your local Nissan dealership will be able to help in any meaningful way.

Best of luck, and remember to keep cash in reserve just in case.

Please....Please...Please...Do not buy a $10,000 gt-r. A decent gt-r in Canada will set you back $15,000. Stay as close to stock as possible. This way you might limit the repair costs somewhat. Parts and service were non-existant one year ago but things are a little better now. If you live anywhere in Canada except for The BC coast or maybe the southern tip of Ontario, I'm sure you will have a nasty winter to contend with. So now you also need a winter beater.
Stick with the gts. and as someone else sugested, have some money set aside for repairs...

Okay, In my opinion, the GTR is the better car for power and handling because of the 4 wheels drive and the bigger engine. And at 17 the insurance will be high, so if you have enough money then go for the GTR, but the insurance will be less on the GTS. I would Love if i could afford a GTR at 17 and hopefully i will be able too if i sell my car that im getting at 16. I was going to wait will like 20, but if your thinking of buying one at 17 i think i might have to join you in a few years :)

No Its not a nice metaphore, its like saying have an Enzo, or just dont bother. nevermind the other highly regarded models eh.
This is a Skyline forum that supports ALL models.
Yes the GTR is the superior model, but not always suitable for every person... especially a 17 yr old newbie to Skylines.
If the poor guy crashed his GTR due to being unable to handle the car properly, i bet you'd be one of the first to say, yeah, he should have bought a GTS first to get used to driving Skylines.
And for your info, there are plenty of GTST's out there that would make a GTR look bloody stupid.
Try giving good reasons behind a purchase rather than slating the lesser models first.:chairshot

i did say if he could afford it, can you read my comment properly before ripping it to shreads. :bawling:

I never said the GTS was rubbish, i like it.
also i never said don't buy a gts, i just said the GTR is a more powerful and better handling car standard, which it is!

Its not supposed to be an arguement anyway. The poor guy (albeit with lack of full details ) asked whether he should wait and get a GTR with more funds in a few months time rather than hastily buying a GTS.
With those details only, my first response was, yes wait, but knowing more details , just purely on maintenance costs and Insurance, i would say go for the GTS. They are great cars still, albeit not the icon of the Skyline legend, but still plenty of room for extra power. Still not cheap with regards to mods or maintenance but cheaper nonetheless.
Personally i'd actually go for something non skyline but Jap and still fun for a 17 yr old, but its his choice and wallet in the end.

I think thats a stupid point you made how is a GTS, 260bhp? v 290 for a std GTR more safe than GTR? for starters the GTS can bit back just as hard if abused being RWD. Yes you can say a GTR is more powerfull, but with its part time 4wd it can also be safer.

Also the point about the Enzo is stupid too, I tink there is a huge difference between that and say a 360, 430 etc!

My pesonal view is anyone under 22 atleast should not go anywhere near a Skyline age and inexperience makes them a liability! I really hope insurance companies start to ban them for young drivers!

But take me for example, i like skylines a lot and if i were to buy one at say 17-20 its not really a time to go crazy in you car for all the reasons of being inexperienced but then i can drive well now and yes i know there is a lot i still need to know. But i would get a skyline because i love the car not to go nuts in it and burning it out everywhere.

Ollam.there is quite a few skyline owners who bought there car before there 22 and have had no problems if your a idiot don’t buy one but not just on your age. And yes a gtr is far safer beast than the gtst but gtst can also be more rewarding but be careful with it or it will kill you.
