after having my skyline a year now i'v been thinking about further tuning the engine but... and it's a BIG but!

SKYLINE TAX !

25k for a 800bhp engine! for that kind of money our man from norway vidar strand would build me this V.S Motor - Vidar Strand and would include the car!

so what im getting at is do we as skyline owners pay a premium to own and mod our cars

or maybe it's the age old problem of us brit paying over the odds for everything.....

Engine

I think thats a fair price for a real 800bhp engine with all new good proven parts.

If us Skyline owners are being ripped off, time to buy another car that you can ask someone to build an 800bhp engine for for less than that, let me think....what can I buy.......not much....... I know!, ask a Porsche tuner how much for an 800bhp 911 engine. :chuckle: The cars may have got cheaper to buy but the expertise and parts havent as they are both really specialised. :)

If the engine build doesnt suit your budget, dont do it as at somepoint it WILL cost you even more when you realise all the other parts you need to support 800bhp without making your car super dangerous to drive, ie a stock car with an 800bhp engine isnt fun.

Only my 2p and hope it constructively helps you decide what to do.

could this 2.8lt stroker kit be just as good as for example an hks 2.8lt kit but more realistcally priced?
Would you want to be the one to put down your £4k and find out? And then be stood over it screaming its nuts off at 8000rpm, while you wonder... How DID they make those crankshafts so cheaply?

It might be great, but without a named brand to fall back on, its an unknown.

if you are going to stroke, get something like JUN, HKS or greddy orso...

better spend that couple of grand more than ruining the whole engine...

just get a rips built engine from rips...take advantage of the exchange rate and he will supply all proven stuff for less than that budget and can have over 800bhp no worries

Skyline Tax definitely exists!

I've had a quote in the last few weeks for a new set of wheels (Works XD9's) and a well known Skyline parts supplier quoted me £2100, but another supplier (less well known for Skylines) quoted £1100.

Shop around, as it seems that some of the more well known suppliers will take you for a ride, BIG time!!

The point is though, try getting a tuner to give you any kind of warranty with parts you've sourced yourself?

I agree with Andy, doing the engine is only half the story.

My advice (if you really want that kind of power) is sell your car and buy one that already has it (UK Built) - have you seen the money people offer for seriously tuned UK cars. Take it from me, it's probably about half of the total build costs, not including the actual cost of buying the car.

In other words you get nothing in return for serious mods when it comes to selling time - the buyers all want that bargain and aren't prepared to pay the price because, hey they can buy one already done from Japan that is 'proven' at half the price. lol.

I dont think you know the Norwegian tax system.
You guys should concider yourselfs lucky.

For a 800hp legalized car, the taxes would be:

each hp above 280 = about 1200nkr.
1200nkr = 100GBP
that is 520hp x 100gbp= 52.000GBP.

You get some reduction based on the age of the car, but this is the basic calculations.

And then, when you have paid taxes, you can get the car legalized, IF you are lucky.

If / when i can get my R32 on norwegian roads, only the taxes will be around 80.000nkr = 6500GBP
This is all plus the cost of the car. If i bought a 10.000gbp r32 it would cost me 17-18.000gbp included everything. You actually have to pay taxes on the shipping costs to get the car to norway.....

I agree. I've seen supras and skylines with 600+ for around 12grand and they say its had 30grand+ spent. basicly 'im selling my car, im losing buddles of money' lol

25K? I expect that would be for everything, engine, Turbo(s), IC, ECU, Injectors, head work, radiator, clutch, tuning.....basically everything required from fuel pump to exhaust tip?

The prices for Skyline parts have fallen massively in the last year or two. For example 2.8l Tomei stroker kit for about £3K,shipped taxed the works. Cheap as chips for pistons rods and crank.
Even the HKS step3 2.8 kit is £4k delivered but minus import tax, still less than £5K. Probably only require a step 1 for 800 anyway.

Turbo??? How about the full HKS T51Kai kit for aprox. £3.5K delivered and taxed?

Or if you were worried about the costs to assembly an engine in the UK,you could go the OS Giken 3l route sourced direct from Japan. Fully assembled short blocks for £6.7K including clutch but without shipping and vat. (Bear in mind that these prices include Japanese tax, which you should be able to reclaim when exporting to UK.)

The actual engine itself is not the massive money it used to be 2 years ago, but it does require upgraded everything to run a reliable 800.

I'm sure you could build one for a fair deal less than £25K.
