Been driving on the M4o today from London to Birmingham.

On the way back noticed smoke coming from the ashtray (R33). I quickly pulled over and thought the car was on fire!!! But it was all safe.

Also the leather boot for the gearknob was all very hot and as I have a MOMO gearknob, the lower metal part was also very hot.

Now I suspect this to be the exhaust getting too hot. I have a NISMO SS full system.

Has anyone else had this problem especially with a NISMO exhaust, or am I thinking the wrong thing. Could it be something else.

And above all how can it be solved, and should there be a heat shield in the transmission tunnel???

And this is the first time its happened. Never happens on short runs.

I need to know before my car catches alight!!!!

Thanking all of you in advance

Suggestion

If you were cruising long and hard maybe the gearbox/gearbox oil had become very hot and was smoking a little. It is quite normal for Skyline gearboxes/gear sticks to get quite hot epecially if no coolers are fitted . What were your oil temperature readings ?

My advice would be to take it to a Skyline secialist and have it checked or at least the gearbox oil changed .

High Speeds

We were cruising to and from Germany in 33's and 34's and at speeds approaching 150mph for 1-2 hours at a time and never came across this problem.

Like Paul says get a specialist to get it on some ramps and have a good look over it. Might be an idea to check you have the correct level/oil in your gearbox first. Sounds like its heat related because if it was wiring I'm sure something would have gone by now.

Do you know the history of the car ???

Well oil temp. readings were under 100.

That is the only thing I could think off; the gearbox.

Am going to change the oil very soon. What is the spec for the gear oil and is it available from Nissans??

And yeah same to you m19 gtr, if you find out before please let me know as I'm worried.

Have you got a heat shield BTW??? And what exhaust are you running??

And Paul is it advisable to fit a oil cooler for the gearbox??

Cheers

Worried

Well I have all the FSH and MOT's all the standard parts. What other history do I need to know??

And yeah like you say if it was electrically related, something would have gone by now.

Will check the gearbox oil level and does anyne again know the specification of the oil to be used??

Bit hard to say then without being in the car. You may have a slight oil leak somewhere near a hot area but you need to go to a specialist and tell them EXACTLY what you were doing at the time. They should, if they don't know the answer, try and recreate the situation.

I notice you mentioned you are in London. Try AbbeyMotorsport or GT-Art who are both South of the M25 :) .

Cant see it being the gearbox

There is a rubber boot under the leather boot which is there to stop unwanted smells or smoke.
If it was gearoil getting hot; you'd notice a very distincnt sickley smell (a smell of its own, sort of smell you wouldn't lose for a while).
I'd be thinking down the lines of an electrical fault, maybe the cig lighter or if the lights where on maybe the bulb lighting the outer surround of the cig lighter / ashtray come lose over heating something .

Are you sure it was smoke and not steam?, the heater matrix may well be leaking.

Well as I said before the leather gaiter does get expels a lot of heat and the gearknob gets pretty hot.

The rubber boot underneath the gearknob seemed ok when last time I had a look.

And it is smoke definitely.

And another thing that I noticed is that 3/4 of the way up there it was raining and there was no signs of this smoke. Onlt for the end of the journey when it was dry did I see smoke.

But I do see where your coming from jpridgeon. the transmission tunnel is all sealed including that rubber boot.

Which is why I ask if anyone has ever come across this problem.

R33s/Skyline are prone to probs with the gater

around the gear selection forks as DCD says.
If you can get it on the ramps and have a look around where the gearbox ends. I remember seeing it on my first one and they seem very prone to this.

There is a gator/seal there that is pretty weak and starts to leak. You may have got the oil really hot, it started to seap through and when it touches a really hot part then you will start to see smoke. It may have hit the exhaust or de cat pipe??

Bit like if Oil leaks on the manifold then it looks as if all hell has broken loose in the RB26 but just some excess oil burning off.

Just some thoughts.

my .002 bhp worth,

if the smoke was coming out of the ashtray when you were moving you can be pretty sure the de cat pipe/exhaust area under the car isn't to blame. the smoke would have been coming out of the back of the car. airflow would cause it to be blown away as you were driving along.

the smoke would have to have come from the engine bay front firewall area, or be an electrical fault behind the console.
Did the airvents put some bad smoke smells out ?
There are a lot of elctronics behind the ashtray area with the stereo etc.. have you had the dash apart lately ?

you may have pinched a wire when putting it back together.

If in doubt take it to someone who knows what they are talking about.

hope you get it sussed.

No smoke from the air vents.

Will have to check wiring behind console.
