I realised that HKS discontinued a few of their gear boxes including the 6 speed dogbox version 1 & 2 for the R32-R34 GT-R.

This include the rather expensive overhaul thing where you have to ship your gearbox away to japan for a service, thats all history.

But If HKS no longer supply any support where can we now get spareparts for this dog boxes??

Thinking about all internal wear and tear parts and maybe a workshop manual with tolerances etc.

I know that the earlyer HKS version 1 box was build by Hollinger but the later version 2 and maybe some late version 1 boxes was a cheaper copy not build by Hollinger.

I got a reply from Hollinger, they do not really want/can not help if the box is not produced by them.

Does any one have some experience getting spare parts maybe locally machined or have had a box overhauled recently?

Cheers

Hi, it was HKS Europe.
The reply is attached below:
---------------
Unfortunately the product was discontinued many years ago.

Repair and service was only possible by returning the transmissions to HKS Japan themselves for overhaul but sadly this option is no longer available as the transmissions and parts for them are no longer manufactured and are no longer supported.

Regards,

HKS Europe Ltd & HKS SP Ltd.

Any one that can confirm that Quafe mede the late HKS boxes and will supply spares today?

Ok, got some pretty negative response now from both SVS and Quaife UK.

Response from quaife uk, they do not even answer my question, I am just asking if they can provide spare parts or know where to get them.

Response from Quaife:

Thank you very much for your enquiry;

No we have not taken over the production of the gearboxes for HKS.

If you have any further questions or I can be of any assistance in the future please don't hesitate to contact me.

And the reply from SVS:

Many thanks for your email. I am sorry to say I dont think I can help. We
were involved with Trust-Japan or GReddy as they are better known these
days. We had a product like that made by UK transmission manufacturer
Quaife. We sold hundreds of them. After about 8 years selling the Quaife
one, HKS introduced theirs. Actually I never saw inside one of those kits. I
was told by someone that for any parts or overhaul, their kit had to return
to Japan. Maybe they discontinued now, I really dont know.
However, any kit that fits into the stock transmission case really doesnt
handle enough power. We learnt this back in about 1999 so we made a complete
sequential 6-speed for the GTR instead, much bigger gear diameter. We sold
this one for over 10 years already, then last year we revised it again. Its
a great product.

Maybe you could sell your HKS to someone who needs spares ?
Sorry I dont have any better idea

Best regards
SVS

I am still waiting on reply from Gearboxman.

Quafe didn't take over the production of the HKS box's, as with pretty much everything HKS makes, they contract a specialist in that field and then put there brand on it along with a steep price tag.

Tim (SVS) was very helpful with parts for my trust/grex box, which is the one he is on about and is only rated to 650ish BHP. So i might not use it for my build.

Did you buy this box cheap or are you looking at getting one?

I am looking to buy one including clutch. Axels and diff´s if needed. I am running the std box now but it will need new syncros soon and as I am increasing the hp level I thought looking for stronger drive line would be the way to go.

But I do not really want to spend 4-5K£ if you can not get spares for a later rebuild as dog boxes does not seem to last forever...

Did you ask Quafe "if they took over production" or "if they can supply spares for"

Their reply reads like the former and the meaning is considerably different.

I would send a reply back to them, stating "Thankyou for reply, I understand you did not take over production of the HKS box, but can you confirm if you can supply spare parts for it such as synchros as they are no longer supported by HKS and I believe you built the kits for HKS."

I wrote somthing like " Hi, I have an HKS 6-speed H-pattern dog box in my R33 Skyline GTR.
Do you possibly sell spare parts (bearings, gears etc) for this particular transmission? ..."

David, I did reply quite similar to what you proposed, I think your version is slight more polite though. Sometimes it is hard not to have english as your 1st language i´m afraid...

I don't really understand why the standard casing isn't good enough?
It is because you have a 5spd gearbox casing that you are squeezing a 6spd into.
It was thought for a long time that the HKS 6spds were originally built for drag racing etc, but they were made for high speed runs, so the extra strength wasn't required.
Everyone that I know that has had one, broke it.
