Just returned from Alex Noble Gtr dealer ,Edinburgh. had a few stone chips on bonnet of my 09 Black Edition (Ultimate Silver) , also noticed some marks on Drivers door where some twat has hit car with something and left 2 small deep scratch,s about quarter of an inch long and an inch aprt from each other on Drivers door just below door handle !!! so i thought i,d get door repaired and do chips on bonnet while i was there !!!!
OMG , paint is £500 a litre , and according to Paint shop Manager the whole side of the car has to be re,sprayed ,I asked him why cant he just do the whole drivers door , he said it is due to the way the Paint is done on the Ultimate silver Cars and if he only did the door it would be noticable and paint would not look right ........WTF :chairshot
He is at this moment preparing a quote and will e mail it to me when ready,
Has anyone else had this problem with paint and do you think having to do the whole side of the car is a bit extreme for 2 small scratch,s ??????
Why didnt Nissan/ Alex Noble tell me about how expensive any paint repairs would be when i was buying the car ?

If I'm honest I changed my mind over the UMS paint as I'd heard there could be issues if a repair was needed.

Sorry to hear about your scratches, there are some twats around.

If it makes you feel any better, I've a stack of stone chips on my bonnet...

Hi. Sorry to hear about your damage. Does your HPC have its own a paint shop? I'd get a second opinion before spending a penny at any HPC! Licensed to rip off!

Well my friend had an egg thrown at his last night, and it turns out, the egg or the shell had damaged the paintwork on impact. Headsup, watch out for kids with eggs!!!

Whole side of my arse !!

Depending on where the scratches are and the way the paint is layered (which is only a pearl type at the end of the day) it would probably be possible to blend it over two panels, three at worst if its near the sill.

Even if the paint is £500/litre I doubt you would need much of that to paint an entire car as its likely the expensive part that goes over a cheaper base with perhaps another expensive laquer on top.

I would pretty confidently predict we could do it for under £2k and maybe under £1000 deending on exactly how much the paint costs etc.

If we can do it so can your local specialist paint sprayers. This sort of thing really gets my goat as these dealers rip everyone off left right and centre, then people like us go bust trying to fight over the jobs that dont pay as everyone is frightened to death of getting their car fixed !! Thank god we do alot of motorsport prep and stuff otherwise we'd have closed long ago.

I spoke with the guys that painted the door on my RS4 late last year (they are Porsche approved) and they reckon there is no way an entire side of a car needs painting for a scratch on the door....regardless of the paint! I'd get some other quotes because this HPC nonsense is getting out of hand!

Nobles are right you will need to paint the whole side to get a perfect match, on a ultimate silver car the paint process is totally different to any other paint job, blending is not a option on that colour,
Its a new process that Nissan have come up with to get the finish on ultimate silver, so all those body shops that say they no better unless they have been on the specialist paint course that Nissan did in france last year for a week to teach the GT-R body shops how to do it good luck with the blending in.
Its your car if you want to paint just the door and the bonnet tell nobles that's all you want painted, and after you see your car looks like one of those old VW polo's with the different coloured panels you might think again.

I forgot to add did the extra cash for the ultimate silver paint on your order not give a slight clue as to maybe being more expensive to fix also.

I dont mean to come across as being cheeky but when you think about it makes sense yes?

the expense of fixing the scratchs isnt a problem i just thought it was a bit over the top that the whole side of the car had to be done , ,you were saying that if i just painted the door and bonnet then the car would look like an old vw polo with all different coloured panels !!!! would that not be the same then if they only painted one side of the car ????

Good point there ,if they cant match the paint up for less than quarter of a car then they cant match it up for half a car .Live with a few scuffs untill it all needs doing is probably better ,get a colour match stick or those chips away people in .

Try a really good detailer.

With the UMS paint you will have much more thickness to play with and they may be able to significantly reduce the appearance of the scratches or even make them go completely.

I would recommend Paul at Ultimate Shine based here in Scotland.

He wet sanded my front and rear bumpers trying to get a better colour match after poor quality from the factory.

He also managed to get rid of a huge amount of orange peel effect from the bottom of the doors.

Regards

Scott

Well if thats a "new process" I reckon Nissan should stick to building cars! Really intelligent......lets paint a car that can't be repaired or resprayed unless you respray the whole car! But don't tell the buyer...just charge him more in the first place for the privilege! Now that's automotive progress!

I've been told a very well regarded HPC can sort out a fairly large stone chip on an Ultimate silver bonnet by simply filling & painting the particular area, then and applying a new layer of lacquer over the whole bonnet - does this seem right?

Afternoon All,

Anybody who knows body work knows you have to blend either side of the repair to get a perfect match! Depending on the where the damage is and how long it is you would normally only repair 2 panels but half of the second would only be lacquer!

My advice would be to get a second opinion but make sure they are GTR Approved because as the chap before said they are the ones who are trained.

Cheers
Noel

Get a good wrap and be done with the painting circus.
Had the same problem - my car came back from the 1200 mls opti service with scratches on each panel - had it wrapped and never looked back !
