Just wondering if Tokyo or Rocket Ronnie could take the Zonda on around Top Gears track? Don't know too much about these two but I do know that they are quick in a straight line!! Have you applied or do you think you could beat the Zonda??? I would have thought it would be close and good to see on TV. Cheers

Hi, Didn't the Zonda's time get beaten on the last programme though? caught the tail end of some orange kit car going round their track and beating it by about a second or so??

Cheers, Paul K

Sorry, foregot about that. Yes it was the Westfield XRT2 track car. Well, could either of them beat this???? I also reckon the Radical SR3 will beat this time too.

In evo TCOTY the SR3 wasted the XTR2, so yeah, that should prove seriously stiff competition. You can get over 500bhp per ton with them too. When was the last time you saw a 1500bhp Skyline? As that's what you would need to make a 1500kg car become seriously competitive on a shortish track against the SR3, so unless they go to the Ring I think the Skyline has no chance at all. Perhaps they should make the SR3 ownder DRIVE their car to the ring, if he actually made it then I would be very surprised, as although that thing is road legal, it's not a road car, and surely that's the point? It is in every sense of the words a Track Car, and so is the Westfield. Top Gear are going to kicp up quite a controversey if they hail the Westfield as the quickest road car.

Perhaps Colin McRae should have a go at it, I'm sure I remember reading that his Focus is road legal, he has to drive it between stages or something?

I believe that no SR3's have yet passed an SVA so aren't road legal and hence wouldn't qualify! The XTR2 only just beat the Zonda's time, so there is a good chance a skyline might be able to beat that time (well with the right power/suspension/brakes), but I suspect that when the SR3's are made road legal they'll win!

Unforunately..

There is no way a Skyline will beat the Top gear lap record.

Sorry but its reality, power/weight ratio etc..

Its not going to happen , in fact I would wager may be a good 3 or seconds off the record so far.

the WRC cars are quick, but not incredibly quick. You remember that Escort Cossie 7 speed from TOTB. Well this was quicker than a Focus WRC round Donington Park running only 24lbs of boost (it is capable of 38) and with a passenger. As it was a track day neither driver was pushing hard. So this means a WRC shouldnt be much competiton at all.

As much as I'd like to disagree (we're all Skyline fans, right?), I gotta agree with Mr S on this one. A short track isn't the Skyline's forte - we all know that.

But..... The 'road legal' tag they stick on disguised race cars stinks. How about a GTR with a set of slicks, no interior, no sound deadening? 'That's not road legal'. What?!!!! How about 'no windscreen'?!!! ' Thats 'legal' apparently....

I'd rather drive a 'slow' Skyline than have flies stuck in my teeth. Blah blah blah.

Ian, I think you are right but not for those reasons.

I have at last seen the footage (I don't watch TV, unless at gunpoint) and to beat that Zonda on that track you need suspension travel, I was not that interested in the cars but the 'track' and its set-out is much more interesting. editing different bits from the 3 programs shown so far gives a good idea of what is needed, I think that even a powerful 'saloon' could get within a couple of seconds, an AMG Merc would be quite close. (if only it didn't have such a 'cheap' set-up)

To beat a 'go-kart' type of car on that track you need a 'supple' performer not a heavier 'go-kart' as a lighter one will be 'handier'.

I think the 'track' has been 'designed' to be like this, with cross-camber bends limited travel, hard suspension gives worse exit speeds than long travel supple movers.

I'll never know, but feel I'm right.

I thought the 'wetfeel' was very disappointing.
The new Top Gear was looking interesting until they start to bring it tat like that.

I doubt they will permit the Skyline club to show what is or is not achievable.
'Cos ehs' have a certain appeal which the program wanted, no doubt 'Locusts' and 'Fiats' as well.

If they wanted Skylines in the first place they could have invited us or given us a more positive answer to the approaches that have been made so far by this register.

Is there any update Glen?

Or do we need to get a motor scooter engine and a supermarket trolley and build something in the garden shed to gain TV appeal?

Is there an update?

about 10 days ago there was some dialog with one of the researchers from TG and one of the moderators (can't remember which one?)& they seemed to be taking the skyline as a serious contender - has anyone got an update??

I thought that the Westfield XTR was only road legal without the rear wing and you could only attach it for track use ?

If this is the case then surely the time doesn't stand as it was not road legal when lapping the test track.
I doubt that it would make a huge difference to it's laptime but it might have been enough to see it behind the Zonda.

I hate to say it but I agree with Ian, the chances of a Skyline beating that little rocket powered Westfield are pretty slim.

As Clarkson himself once said, "The Caterham (near enough a westfield) doesnt have much power .. but on the other hand, it only weighs as much as a J-Cloth!"

Love to see someone try though, and even better see them beat it in some big whupass GT-R, but I dont think its going to happen :(

Skyline lap time

Depends what type of skyline it is. you could chook at the zonda any 100bhp+ skyline which is all well in a straight line but you need the cornering speed too. anyone see last weeks top gear, forget what that £20000 custom car was but it kicked the zondas ass round the track. And the grannys doing doughnuts, that was preety impressive!
