Feckin [email protected]@rds!

My brother got married mid 2005 and, having already bought the house, decorated it and furnished it, the one thing they really wanted but hadn't managed to justify buying was a pukka set of luggage. Sad to some, I'm sure, but it's what they really, really wanted so my Mum & Dad bought them a really expensive set of brushed silver luggage. I don't profess to know enough about luggage to be able to name the brand or anything, but I know it was pretty expensive and really nice.

Soo...

They've just got back on Saturday from a holiday trip to Houston, Texas and when collected their luggage, noticed that there was a big ream of sticky tape round one of their cases, holding it shut. On closer inspection, the combination lock had been smashed open and the key locks at each side prised apart as well. Inside was a small laminated card telling them that their bag had been randomly searched by US customs and that US customs were not responsible in any way for any damage or loss of contents.

The case is completely ruined as the brutal f*ckers have obviously taken great pleasure in being as destructive as possible, and what's worse is that the luggage was a limited edition and the single case cannot be replaced - the entire set has to be replaced if they want a full matching set now.

The REALLY annoying thing is that they were available at the airport and would've glady opened it for US cusoms if they'd just tannoy'd them. So basically, boys and girls, it's their own fault for securing their luggage. Next time they should leave it open so that any half-assed luggage handler can rifle through it and help themselves to whatever they want, drug dealers can pop a couple of bags of smack in their spare underpants and some maladjusted nutcase can slip a few blocks of semtex in there as well, eh?

Good-oh.

Yea, it depends on what country you go to.

For USA, its been known for years to leave it unlock as they WILL open it and get into it if they decide to check it. And yes, I hope your brother bought insurance and can claim on it.

If you are going to Moscow/Russia, then you wrap the entire suitcase in plastic sheet to make sure the custom do not get into it, because the custom is known to take stuff home with them. At least that was what was told to me 3 years ago when I went there.

As a resident American, yes, leave your luggage unlocked. I do, and yes, the same thing has happened to me, so they are not alone. Sometimes I think some of those TSA people say 'oohh, look, a nice new suitcase. Is it locked? Yes! Let's smash it....'

Take it as a lesson learned...and i hope they liked Houston.

I love that, leave your luggage unlocked! so anbody can nick, plant stuff, ect, ect  or of course you could be sensible and leave it locked so customs can have a play and smash your case and say "tough", it really is a great world we live in sometimes........

Yep - my bruv worked out there for a while managing the Houston office of the company. Loved it and didn't want to come back :D He had to sell his Scooby when he went over so bought himself a Mistu GTO. Long empty, wide Texan roads. No rain. Cheap petrol. Pool. Air con everywhere. :D And everyone loved his 'cute' English accent :D

PMSL Yes indeedy. I NEED the Rant forum. Without it as a means to express my complete loathing of the human cattle and utter sewer filth of the human gene pool I would have no alternative other than to seek an active expression of said loathing. And however nice it would be to see 100 or so shellsuit wearing scrotes screaming behind the locked, glued and barricaded doors of the local JJB Sports emporium as the flames spread from one burberry baseball cap to a Kappa shellsuit leg, to set of sovereign encrusted knuckles and on through the heaving throng of scum.... I must keep reminding myself that theses are BAD thoughts. Naughty Jim...

Blah, Blah, Blah...it's luggage? That's like me buying a new set of Goodyears and being upset when the tread's worn down after 10K miles FFS? I dont get this at all. Anyone who's traveled more than once knows that luggage takes a beating, also it's common knowledge to leave your suitcase open when you travel by air in the States...

I think someone just enjoys every chance they get to slate Americans...probably why I dont come in here much! I like to talk cars, not politics!!! ;)

Then p1ss off back to a car-related section of the forum ;)

Seriously though - to use your analogy. You buy your nice spanky new 18" tyres at £150 a corner, then someone DELIBERATELY hacks one of the to pieces the next day.

What's your problem? Everyone knows that tyres take a battering on the roads?

Get my point?

Heathrow was called Thief Row for years because the specialist unit that X-Rayed incoming/transit baggage helped themselves generously to whatever they fancied.

Perhaps if the luggage was aluminum/aluminium, US anti-terrorism X-Ray machines might struggle to see through it, and the temptation to bust it open could catalyze with envy and increase correspondingly?

I suppose you could in future put a mobile/cellphone number on a small sticker by the lock with a request to call one first...

Is there no publicly stated policy on this question available in the US, I wonder?

the only thing i don't get, is you are constantly asked "did you pack this case yourself" "did you leave it unattended" etc

but you're expected to let it fly unlocked?!?!?! Whats to stop someone putting stuff in it, let alone taking stuff out

thats insane

These questions are asked at check in, once your bags are turned over to the airline person they enter a "secured" area...everyone working these areas have had at a minimum a background investigation accomplished so they are supposedly not a "terrorist".

I doubt that folks checking baggage are "envious" of luggage, I'm sure they see it all day long.

Put a sticker with a cell phone that has to ring thru the uK? Doubt that many would personally pay to make an overseas cell call...would you?

The rules are VERY publicly stated regarding the locking of bags while traveling in the US!

I have been detained by US customs as a 17 year old travelling on business. They didnt believe me and was interviewed by 3 people seperately.
It was a nightmare. All this after an 11 hour delay at Heathrow because the baggage handling truck hit the back of the plane.
I was ****ed off /scared, and freaking out.

They have more powers than the US police and FBI. Dont **** them off.

So they get my bag off the conveyor belt and empty it onto the floor.
** This is no word of a lie **
A "Baggie" full of white powder falls out of a trainer. They think bingo & I poo my pants.

Anyway at 17 my 'helpful' mum packed most of my gear. Including talcum powder, in a plastic bag in my shoe. I never use talcum powder.

They let me go after about three hours.

Fun Fun Fun
