hi guys,

im looking at cams that will take me to 400+awkw, running garrett -10's as some would now know.

i have been told that 270degree with 10.5mm (tomei) would be ideal (IN/EX) but if i do this do can i get away with just cams & springs?

alternatively, i can run a set of tomei type b poncams which are 260degree with 9.15mm lift at a fraction of the cost...would this option take me to my goal @ 400awkw with head porting?

regards,

HPI magzine found that changing the cams on a GTR did not make much difference.
Basically said your money can be better spent elsewhere.

a friend of mine made 362awkw on his gtr with tomei poncams...later he upgraded to 272degree & made 430awkw but also added 5psi for this gain

You wont no way make 70 kw atw with a cam change ....
A 3 litre with a 26 head and gtrs's should make over 400 with standard cams,
If you really want to change them , put real cams in it not 260 degree ones.
280 + 11mm lift, the 3 litre really has so much torque you can get away with big cams and still have no effect on low down power.
But, Im pretty sure you will make 400 with stock cams .....

My RB26 jumped 50hp by changing to the Tomei poncams (tune change as well) with 2860-5's.....

Glad I bought mine....

as silly as it sounds i really like the sound of an agro idle, with my current tomei type a cams (260IN, 252EX) it sounds like a stocker...previously when i had tomei type b cams (260IN, 260EX) it had that lumpy idle :D

i could only imagine what 272's would sound like :D
this to me is a bonus - obviously with the power increase as main objective!

would there much difference between 260degree cams & 272degree cams in terms of peak power? im sure midrange power the 260's would be better?

i agree mate - ive decided to go for the 280degree cams (after confirmation from the 'god of rb30builds' :) im sure you can guess who this is), i have the choice between 10.8mm lift or 11.5mm lift...i might just go all out for the 11.5's and be done with it :p

It is in issue 103 (latest I think) and 93
Will scan them for you later today as HPI dont do online articles
PM and addi and I will get it across to you.
oh & thanks again for emailing that article - much appreciated!

^^^It will be one tough idle. Just make sure you have the line "its stock officer" down pat if you ever get pulled over!:chuckle:

My RB30 with the Tomei 280, 10.8 lift cams idles beautifully, spot on. Thats with a race (RIPs) ported head.

does it sound very lumpy and agro :p?
IMO it sounds sooo much nicer than a flat 'BRRR...'

seeing that rob ported your head, did he suggest the 10.8's?

when does your turbo come on song and what kw are u running?

10.8's were Robs choice. Running about 740bhp at the fly. Had the turbo coming on at about 2500-2700rpm but it maxed out at about 7000rpm, so we re-dialled the cams and now it comes on at about 3200-3500rpm and it produces power all the way to the rev limiter 8250rpm.

If it comes on at 3500rpm, how much rpm until its at max boost?

Running 1000cc injectors, dual feed into the fuel rail and a RIPs custom fuel system, I think double or triple Bosch 044's. I dont think its got much more beyond 8250rpm before it maxes out.

Sounds like my setup if you've got 3 x 044's.

Are they mounted externally? The sound of the fuel pumps is great to wake up to in the mornings :D
