Evening all, I was watching the drifting at the Pod today, impressive:smokin: , but what would you need to make an R33 GTR slide like that? They grip so well as standard.I have a near standard car that will slide, but not to the extent of those cars. Can you make em rwd only?, discon the hicas??, have torque converters?, higher poundage coilovers?
I'd be interested in any opinions you have?

Cheers

The GT-R is fairly front heavy for drifting - so can tend to understeer into tighter corners. It's unusual to use a GT-R for drifting, but I've seen it done here in Japan with decent results, at club level.

To drift an R33 GT-R, you'll need a few basic things: Hicas replacement kit, Grid TS Dancer 4WD controller, 2 way rear Differential, uprated twin plate clutch kit, coilover suspension set fairly hard, negative camber on front suspension, good handbrake.

Just get an R32 GTS or GTST, and optimize the suspension for drift, focus on tires as well, and get skilled at drifting beforehand, that's more important. If you know how to drift, then you can drift anything with wheels on it. Seen that avatar with the kid on the trike, if he can do it, anyone can.

'kinell andy, if you thought that was good you should see it properly when theres an area bigger than a postage stamp to use, bloody tiny there, so only low speed dicking about.

but yeah, disable 4wd and they are driftable as they are, not amazing, but more than good enough for a beginner. you dont need more power, jus commitment.

Skylines feel a bit on the big side to drift - much easier in light, small cars :)

However, anyone here ever wire an on/off 4WD switch for their R32? Seems like it should be a fairly straightforward endeavor...

ah, and while we're on the topic of drifting...does anyone make an e-brake handle that locks only when you want it to? Someone must, it just makes a lot more sense to have the level unlocked at default, and then when you're nice and settled and stationary, to have the time to engage the brake lock.

Maybe it's just me, but fumbling for that thumb button in the middle of a wild swinging turn, tail hanging out, modulating steering, clutch, and shifting all at the same time, that's just one needlessly additional distraction.

everytime this comes up the pull the fuse answer is given

alas the car will still have front drive shaft and thus be a bit gay as a drift car :runaway:

anyone who is serious at turning a GTR into a drift machine should examine what Mark lunney built for this yrs D1GB

I was going to Lex ... but everytime I ventured to the drift area it was rather busy ... so i couldn't be bothered. Just got some snaps and went back to the drag :chuckle:

Cheers for the advice all, I don't wanna set up my 33 and start drifting, It's just that I'd love to be able to flick a switch and have some fun ya know. I've owned Gp4 Mk2 Escorts for the last 5 years so I'm used to simple RWD without all this modern stuff that I have now!
I think my best bet is to wack a set of coilovers on the beast, disable the hicas(which I love when I push it too far!lol) and see what digital jiggery pokery gizmos are available to me.

When you out doing it proper the Steve?

Cheers again,

Andy

the fuse only works on the 32's, on the 33 just drop the front prop out and away you go.
