I know that Skylines and Supra's can be relatively easily and reliably tuned to 500+bhp for daily use? So which other Japanese cars can be reliably tuned for this sort of power whilst still being ok to drive to tescos in? :smokin:

RX7's? I heard they get v.expensive and unreliable much past 400bhp
Scoobies? Again seem good for about 400bhp with loads of work (eg JUN cars etc), though Tony Rigoli has built one which had over 500bhp, but isn't really a daily usuable car.
EVO's? Maybe, I think JUN have a 520bhp EVO5 - I wonder if it's still a good car for daily use.

So is there anything else from Japan good for really big power that I've missed?

I've always wondered about the Lexus (Toyota) Soarer 2.5 Twin Turbo - Can that do big power? And I guess the NSX is a special car, can they be seriously tuned?

From memory, SR20DET's can be tuned for 500bhp + and also the 2.5 found in the Soarer (and Chasers/Mark II's) can also comfortably provide 600bhp+. I've heard from people in Japan that these 2.5's are very strong.

I have seen a few tuning kits for the Honda NSX but all are over-priced (as some may say the car is) and provide only about 50bhp extra which isn't really anything to get excited about.

There's only so much you can do to a road-going car with a normally aspirated engine I suppose.

Have you looked at the Nissan 300ZX? 3.0 Litre twin turbo V6 directed at the rear wheels.

I wouldn't fancy working on one though. Tight for space in the engine bay is an understatement...

300 ZX

I looked at 300zx's before I got the scooby, lots of cars for the money, I just couldn't find a decent condition manual one at the time...

I'm going to get a skyline, just interested what else can be seriously tuned. I'd always suspected the Soarers would have a good engine? Is it a smaller version of the supra engine?

Nothing comes close to the GTR/Supras for big power applications.
The Toyota chasers are pretty popular too and can achieve some pretty autstanding figures(see engine below). At drag meets some old soarers from the eighties seem pretty popular as base cars, but they usually use Supra engines. Same goes with 180s/Silvias...the SR20s are good for 450-500 but beyond that RB implants are rather popular!

The SR20DET can be tuned to 750+ bhp - as proven by Jun.

Additionally, Abbey put an SR20DET from a GTI-R in an Audi TT rallycross car for a customer...which came out at 570bhp.

I believe top secret also had an SR20DET silvia which was 800bhp (got it on video somewhere).

It is another highly tunable Nissan engine (they done well again there). Obviously needs alot more work to extract this kind of power than the RB26 as it's only a 2.0ltr lump. But in the right hands, it has awesome potential.

Otherwise, i agree, i don't think you can touch the GTR's and Supra's for tuning ability.

I personally believe that Nissan "down tune" their engines when they realise them, because they all have massive tunability (in my opinion, they are probably the most tunable). The scoobies and EVO's seem to come out of the garage in a much higher tuned state - and it takes alot of work for less improvement. For example, an inductiion, freeflow exhaust and 1 bar of boost generally gives 60+bhp out of a GTI-R engine. You do that to the EVO's and Scoobies, and they don't SEEM to increase as much. This isn't me knocking either car (i like them both), it's just something i've noticed.

I'll shut up now !

3s-gte

The 3S-GTE engine is good.

Used in the Toyota WRC cars and the Jap GT Supras, so there must be some potential :D

The only problem is in the road cars, at least over here, there is a problem in getting much out of them.

I used to have a gt-four, and am still on there group, and its very hard for them to get >300bhp. There are no real Toyota tuners here either - but masses for the Nissan lumps. The MR2 guys seem to be slightly better, but I dont know of any with huge power. Strange as it clearly has potential

I know Simon well as he done the rebuild on my Pulsar and a great job he done, he does look after Skylines but not to the extent of Abbey. Just general and clutch and so on so handy if you are in wiltshire.

Nissan, Toyota, and Cosworth engines seem to be the only ones that can handle over double the power they have in standard form.

I know which breed of engine I'd rather have under the bonnet though! :D

The GTR must be the most tunable car around! The Supra is also okay with big powers. As for the EVO, Scooby and RX , well this is my impression. Two EVOs (V, and VI) with about 450hp went to the track with me last year. The V promptly broke its gear in its 1st lap! The VI lasted 4 laps before gearbox problems. The fierce looking RX with 450 hp lasted all but half a lap before its engine overheated. Anothe RX I know visits the tuner every month for overheating problems and various leakages (also 450 hp).
My GTR and another friend's GTR have 550-600 hp - absolutely no problemo! Anothe Supra with also 550 hp is also without problem. Go figure......

Sorry as for Mercs, Beamers....not many are modded over here. The cost of building these up to the GTR's power level would be close to insanity - could buy a 34 with it! Having said so, there is a Ferarri F355 biturbo churning 700 hp in S'pore. Done by Koenig. It has no problem so far but as far as I know, the guy does not even go to the track.

Mercs

The Merc engines must be ok, seeing all these Brabus and AMG versions that are around. Dont know how much of the engines lives on in these forms though - may be completely different to the originals

:D
Kinda going off topic now though as the thread was for Jap cars, so Ill shut myself up

Cheers

I'll repeat what DAZ GTi-R has said, correct, Scooby's an Evo lose puff at around 300-400 whereas the mighty RB26 well who knows ?? They have claims of 1000, and rumours of 1200, but if you want a very powerful, well set up, best handeling, gorked at car just geta GT-R. I'm a poet an I didn't know it !! No but seriously after being a Ford man for years (still got RS Escort Van producing 200bhp and then trying lots of other Jap makes inc Honda, Mazda, Toyota, (you can do a lot with the Mazda MX6 2.5 V6, as knicked by Ford and put into the larger engined Probe)
Don't waste the dosh, just get yourself a GT-R, or possibly a GT-S, will keep you all posted on The General, standard GT-S (well you know just the downpipe and the induction kit and and and STOP THERE !!!!
