I'm having the car done today and i'm told that they can not tint the front side windows at all as it's against the law and carries a fixed penalty 3 points.

Is this right, I was under the impression you couldn't go more than 25% on the front?

I always had 25% on the front sides and slightly darker on the rears.
Was told that was legal and never stopped or questioned about them.

Just copied the below from the GOV.UK website, hope it helps.

Tinted vehicle windows: the law
Not what you're looking for? ***8595;

The rules for tinted front windscreens and front side windows depend on when the vehicle was first used. There are no rules for tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows.
Vehicles first used on 1 April 1985 or later

The front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through.
Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985

The front windscreen and front side windows must both let at least 70% of light through.
Penalties for having wrongly tinted windows

It’s illegal to fit or sell glass (or a vehicle already fitted with glass) that breaks the rules on tinted windows.

The police or VOSA vehicle examiners use light measuring equipment to measure window tint.

If your windscreen or front side windows are tinted too much you could get:

a ‘prohibition notice’ stopping you using your vehicle on the road until you have the extra tint removed
a penalty notice or court summons

Tinted windows are not part of the MOT test.

Is there anything wrong with this page?

I was pulled after about 2 weeks of owning the car, luckily the police man was very understanding when I told him I just bought the car and had no idea it was illegal, he told me he could endorse me for it but gave me a 7 day notice to fix it and get it inspected by an MOT tester.

I took it to a window tint company who told me there was no point putting any new tints on as its already quite close to the limit.

You have to be careful though as I believe the R35 fronts have a 10% tint anyway so adding a 25% tint is illegal. I had that on mine for a while and found it was too dark in dusk conditions when some cars don't have their lights on and ended up takin it off.

(Sorry for letting the team down with the avatars int his thread! Some sexy ladies on show over there!)

Most "new" cars come with some level of tint already in the glass so by adding any tint to that would make it over the limit.

Tint the rears/side and then go for a slightly lighter tint on the fronts....makes it less obvious and looks like the glass is naturally dark...

Heres a snap of my old Mondeo with legal tints.
I guess if the car has a tint already, at say 10% the installer should go for a 15% additional to make sure you are ok.
You might need to go to another place to have this done though if he is adamant he won't do it.
