Hi. I'm planning on buying a r34 soon. Not sure if it will be gtt or gtr but id be lying to you lot and myself if I didn't say gtt is much more in my price range at the moment because I've just saved a deposit for a house so am starting from scratch almost.... I'm 28 but have only been driving for 2 years because I've always been into my bikes, but I decided enough is enough and done my car test. My first was a shitty 1.6 escort to trash, I scrapped that after a few months and then got a golf gti 180 but then when I'd just starting doing it up the missus got smashed up the rear so to speak, and that was the end of the golf. Now I've got a Leon Cupra R 225 I've done a bit of work to that's 280bhp and pulls nice and strong but thats front wheel drive and not what I want sitting on the driveway.... Basically I'm worried if I get a gtt I'll see a GTR one day and regret not saving longer and doing the job properly, or do you guys in the know think a GTT is the logical step in my car journey and a GTR would be wasted on me, especially considering I've got a ZX6R I do track days on and thrash about when the mood takes me?

If you can afford the r34 gtr then buy one, if you can't I'd strongly recommend an r32/33 gtr.

Hi , I don't think you will ever regret buying a gtt but I guess it depends what your ultimate goals are . I've had mine about 18 months now and it's never missed a beat , I'm going to have to sell it now because I've just bought an r34 gtr . I never thought I would say that but was just in a financially good place so thought I would buy one . I was lucky enough at the time to get a manual gtt that only had 18000 miles on the clock and had looked at a few gtst before deciding to up my budget to a mint gtt . It helps of course that I'm obsessed with skylines but I'm also aware that there are plenty of scrappers out there waiting to be bought as I almost found out the hard way myself whilst searching . I'm pretty sure if you drove my gtt that would be all you needed to convince you , the power is unbelievable , the look is second to none ( in my opinion of course) the depreciation of value out ways any extra fuel costs or maintenance you may need . I would ask plenty of questions on here and there are no silly questions believe me , I've asked them all myself . Good luck.

Agreed , but if it's the r34 shape he's after he is looking at 7000-9000 for a gtt ( maybe less for an auto ) and 24000 plus for a gtr I would think , suppose it just boils down to what his main goals are .

Lets face it, you're gonna end up taking it on a track whatever you buy. Some say that learning in a rear wheel drive is good roots if you know what I mean, but then on the flipside a gtr may be considered easier to handle... if you buy well you'll always be able to trade up, even if it means braking the GT, just time. And at 28 you've got loads of that!

Thanks for all the replies. Basically I've got 2 and a bit months until I've got a years no claims and insurance will be a doable price. I've seen a nice gtt for sale by DCY Europe that's 380bhp and certainly looks the part, for 12500 and that's probably the maximum of what I can round up in that time, so an r34 gtr is out of the question unless I want to wait, which I don't really.... Maybe I should just make a nice gtt my goal for now, learn from it, do my best not to crash it and then ultimately move onto a gtr. Are decent gtt's hard to sell when the time comes? That another thing I'm worried about. Having a 10-12k skyline I can't sell unless it's dirt cheap

I'm guessing your under 20? If so, I really doubt your get insured on ANY Skyline.

£12,500 is WAY overpriced for a GTT, expect to pay around £7-8,000 for one.

Does it have to be a 34? An earlier GTR would cost you a lot less than a 34 and would be far better than a 34 GTT!

I got quoted roughly a grand on a standard r34, 1300 with mods. I can live with that. I know I could get a much better r33 for the money but every morning when I walked out and saw it on my driveway my heart would sink a little. A r34 gtt is a compromise on the gtr, but an r33 is a compromise on even the gtt. I know the R33 would be better performance wise but it just doesn't do it for me.

Any gtr is better than a gtt. But buy it if that's is the way you want to go. You will probably end up regretting it once you get used to the power and want more.

GTT/GTST is a great performance RWD car, but a GTR will always be a better choice for outright performance.
More power can be extracted almost as easily as a GTR, but you will find grip limitations with RWD vs. 4WD

I thought I might give some input here. (This is my personal opinion of course)

I have owned an R33 GTSt for over 10 years now, (its the GTT of the R33 world) I have enjoyed the car immensely and never once in all that time have I ever considered a GTR or wished I had bought a GTR instead. I have however considered an R34GTT.

I feel the added performance of the GTR just isn't worth it for the way I use the car and I prefer the mechanically simpler setup on the GTS as well as the lighter weight. You can of course tune the RB25 to give very good power too. (I don't know my power, it's possibly around 400 at the crank, it's certainly got grin worthy acceleration at those levels)

Yes. the GTR may have a performance advantage and may be faster on a track or at top speed but honestly, 99.9% of the time it makes no difference at all to me especially since I don't race people and use the car purely for my own pleasure.

Had a lot of good times with my little old GTSt and unless I destroy it somehow I foresee many many more years of ownership.

Long story short I had a R33 GTS-T(M) for years before I got a GTR & the only reason was an itch for an R32! Many will say & I'll agree that mechanically you'll get less problems with a clean stage one GTS-T - or GTT for the R34 - over a GTR. I test drove both versions of the R33 & preferred the GTS-T, but in your case it will be your own preference on looks & performance when it comes to you buying an R34.

Just take your time when you do decide to buy.

I know the gtr is a better car but I don't think performance is everything for me right now (I can't believe i just said that). Ideally I don't want to own a R34 gtt or a r33 gtr, but I can't afford a R34 gtr so need to compromise somewhere, and I think id rather compromise on power right now. Sure the r33 gtr might slap me and my gtt in a race but I think id look a lot better as I rolled over the finish line second, still with a big grin on my face

Yeah, it looks that way, and because this is probably just a stop gap car for a few years I could do with it holding some of it's value really. I think I need to do some research to find out how much modding a gtt to a decent spec costs so I can work out what a cars value is to me
