Hi. I'm planning on buying a r34 soon. Not sure if it will be gtt or gtr but id be lying to you lot and myself if I didn't say gtt is much more in my price range at the moment because I've just saved a deposit for a house so am starting from scratch almost.... I'm 28 but have only been driving for 2 years because I've always been into my bikes, but I decided enough is enough and done my car test. My first was a shitty 1.6 escort to trash, I scrapped that after a few months and then got a golf gti 180 but then when I'd just starting doing it up the missus got smashed up the rear so to speak, and that was the end of the golf. Now I've got a Leon Cupra R 225 I've done a bit of work to that's 280bhp and pulls nice and strong but thats front wheel drive and not what I want sitting on the driveway.... Basically I'm worried if I get a gtt I'll see a GTR one day and regret not saving longer and doing the job properly, or do you guys in the know think a GTT is the logical step in my car journey and a GTR would be wasted on me, especially considering I've got a ZX6R I do track days on and thrash about when the mood takes me?

Thanks for reading (if anyone does), all opinions appreciated.

Thanks for all the replies. Basically I've got 2 and a bit months until I've got a years no claims and insurance will be a doable price. I've seen a nice gtt for sale by DCY Europe that's 380bhp and certainly looks the part, for 12500 and that's probably the maximum of what I can round up in that time, so an r34 gtr is out of the question unless I want to wait, which I don't really.... Maybe I should just make a nice gtt my goal for now, learn from it, do my best not to crash it and then ultimately move onto a gtr. Are decent gtt's hard to sell when the time comes? That another thing I'm worried about. Having a 10-12k skyline I can't sell unless it's dirt cheap

I got quoted roughly a grand on a standard r34, 1300 with mods. I can live with that. I know I could get a much better r33 for the money but every morning when I walked out and saw it on my driveway my heart would sink a little. A r34 gtt is a compromise on the gtr, but an r33 is a compromise on even the gtt. I know the R33 would be better performance wise but it just doesn't do it for me.

That's the eBay number of the gtt I was eyeballing. Massively overpriced?

Good info, thanks guys.

I know the gtr is a better car but I don't think performance is everything for me right now (I can't believe i just said that). Ideally I don't want to own a R34 gtt or a r33 gtr, but I can't afford a R34 gtr so need to compromise somewhere, and I think id rather compromise on power right now. Sure the r33 gtr might slap me and my gtt in a race but I think id look a lot better as I rolled over the finish line second, still with a big grin on my face :)

12k is very overpriced, you will struggle to sell it on for half that in a year's time going by pistonheads prices
Yeah, it looks that way, and because this is probably just a stop gap car for a few years I could do with it holding some of it's value really. I think I need to do some research to find out how much modding a gtt to a decent spec costs so I can work out what a cars value is to me

I think I was looking on your website last night actually. I won't be buying until end of august I would have thought so just getting a feel for what's out there, but gods willing, I will own a skyline soon :)

Alright fellas. I thought I'd ask here rather than start a new thread seeing as you seem to know what you're on about, so what supporting mods am i going to need to get a gtt to around 350-400bhp? I'm guessing a turbo back exhaust with 100cpi sports cat, CAI or decent panel filter, a FMIC, maybe a oversized turbo intake pipe, maybe coils, maybe injectors, maybe new turbo?? Then a remap to get everything running right obviously :)

Thanks

I know what you're saying and of course ideally I would like a GTR, but if I wait until I can justify spending that amount of money on a car, I'd be waiting a while... If i took all my savings and sold my cupra R I could probably afford a nice gtr now, but that would be a really bad decision in the long run. I think right now I'd be better off getting a nice gtt to have some fun in and make the step up to gtr in some years, once I actually own a house and my 'extra' money is actually disposable income that I could justify spending on a car. You're a lucky man if you never have to compromise, but for me i think it's compromise or go without for quite some time, and I think the compromise is the better option

I just don't think they look anywhere near as nice. The rear end especially just looks so much better on the R34 IMO. Maybe rather than setting my sights on a R34 I should just start looking at all skylines and find the one that I want the most, and maybe I'll see a nice r33/32 gtr that catches my eye

I think I'm going to need to go look at a few and see if i can get some owners to take me for a spin. Then i can make a real life decision rather than looking at specs and pictures....

Thanks for the input fellas but I think it's going to be a 34. I do like the others and obviously would love the gtr performance, but it's unlikely I'll track the car and I just want something that looks shit hot and has a bit of poke, and for me that the r34. I've still got a couple of months to decide until I get my years no claims so I could change my mind, but I think my mind is made up. Plus I think I'll have more fun in rear wheel drive anyway ;)

Got a quote finally. 1500 on a 380bhp GTT once I've been driving 2 years with a years no claims, which I'm quite happy with. It could have been worse. I also got quoted 1400 on a 404bhp evo 8 which is bloody tempting. Really nice car but it has one big problem.... It's not a skyline.... Decisions decisions.

Well said, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. To be honest I really am tempted by Evo's as well. You'll get a nice 320 evo 8 for 10k and it won't cost too much to get it into the 400 bhp area. I'm going to look at both skylines and Evo's and although I definitely prefer skylines I'm starting to think I might be better off getting an evo now and leaving the skyline until I can afford a r34 gtr. I really don't know tbh. I need to set a price and shake hands with my friend who wants my LCR and then start going and looking at cars. It's not a bad decision to have to make, but a hard one nonetheless

I didn't get an email notification for that comment for some reason but yh, you're right. R34 gtr was never really part of the choice, more part of the dream.... But anyway, there has been progress made in my journey for a beast and his weekend I go and pick up..... A 360bhp Evo 9..... So people don't think this was all a big waste of time I'll explain. Because I've only been driving a year and 7 months I can't get specialised insurance. My high street insurer who are reasonable with mods won't let me buy a beast of a skyline and anyone who would insure me on one right now wants a fortune. It's not a viable solution. I thought having a years no claims in a couple of months would be enough to get decent insurance but it turns out I NEED 2 years of driving experience before someone will insure me on a heavily modded car. With this evo it's 300bhp from factory and with only a turbo back exhaust and a remap it's around 350bhp BUT because it's barely modded my normal insurer will still cover it... Sooo, it turns out the question wasn't gtr or gtt but rather leon cupra r or evo 9... In 5 months once I've got my 2 years driving and people will insure me on a skyline I'll probably be asking the question Evo or skyline, but for now it's Evo. Sorry for the essay but I didn't want people to think I was just some shit chatting dreamer who said he wanted a skyline and bought something completely different, wasting everyone's time in the process...

Thanks for all the replies and maybe I'll be back in 5 months. I honestly couldn't say

Thanks again
