I commend you on being honest with your approach and reasons for purchase.
If the look of the car is more important, then base your decision on that, if the drive is more important, then give that more consideration.
And don't get caught up in the "never compromise" mutter, we're all car enthusiasts here, and if none of us compromised, we'd all be driving around in Paganis, Mclarens and silly supercars, but we all ultimately understand that some things, as much as we want them, are not worth the sacrifice.
So, you've worked out that the R34 is what you want to be in, and you've worked out that at this stage of your life, it is more important that you enjoy the style of your car rather than having the raw performance of a track monster.
This is going to make you happier right at this moment. So you should go down this path.
Everyone will have a differing opinion, I do also, I love the R33 the most in terms of looks, I wanted it in White and it had to be a series 3. But it's for the track, and none of that matters because I was buying it, not you.
So, get the facts of the cars, then decide what you want to be in, if you can afford it comfortably now, then go to town and find the best one you can.
Job done, happy days. One day you will want something else, and when that time comes, you get to go through this all over again. And it will be fun.
Enjoy.
